Well, I think it's somewhat effective since the goblins will only be coming from one of those four directions. Marksdwarves in the tower will be picketing them with fire by the time they hit the top of the ramps, and by the time they reach the bottom they should have quite a few missing of their ranks.

Long in the past now, the fortress has well recovered and is in a pretty stable time. I need to post it soon, it's 1071 now and much progress has been made.

I love how that goblin just disappeared off of the cliff.
Quite a brutal fight, the overwhelming amount of goblins vs a handful of elite dwarves seals the deal.
