The pressure plate triggers when it's at 5/7 and I can turn that pump up to the cistern off at will. As soon as siegers enter the map I turn the pump on and by the time they get to the maze the cistern is usually filled up to about 3's all around. I let the cistern fill and empty about three times to make sure that all the items are melted. There's a small cistern north of the maze that just melts any left over unwanted items as well.
