I like the layout! The farming fields are set up for maximum effiency. For best efficiency, you might want to put a food stockpile in the center, or perhaps a Z-level up in a constructed room. This way dwarves won't have to travel far to harvest.
That was all the dead gobbos at about the 5/8th bit.
This was BEFORE removing floors meant staying on the same z-level.
If you add holes around the archery ranges (channeling), the arrows will drop down to the floor below, unbroken, after striking the wall.
Why don't you drain the ponds into the magma and harvest the resulting obsidian? You'd rid yourself of the water and gain the obsidian.
Actually, there ARE floodgates. They're just raised. One of the two switches in the mayor's office puts them down.
No sand? Looks like you have beaches, though... Unless that's rock.
OH SWEET JESUS THE BARON IS HERE PROJECT IS ON HOLD FOR NAO.
As awesome as that is, didn't that level up the goblins a tad...?
Tripwire and nets. Other than that, I dunno what to tell you.
You're missing the point of water: If he digs down FOR the lake, he can expand it to the lowest level possible! He could fill the entire damn MAP with water, as ill-advised that may be.
