Sorry about that, Seems I missed an update.
Fort Staffrare Log: 13th of Hadrian's Moon 106.
The wall leading north from the fortress has met with some unexpected complications. The ground is too soft and unstable for any construction and could cause sever consequences if we build incorrectly. Some miners had the idea to dig out the sand and build supports into stronger earth but the geologists haven't come to any conclusions yet.
The surface fortress is coming along pretty well with all of the help from the local immigrants. The basic foundations have been laid but there a still a lot of work to be done.
A few of the engineers have reported the river changing flow during dam construction. When I heard this I was ready to throw them over the cliff for such an idiotic reason. Honestly, a sick day would have gone over better with me. They gave me charts, reports, and even dragged me down to the site of the first two dams.
...arblumblegrumfuggindangblastedriver...
Construction of the dams is on hold until we find out what in the name of Armok is going on. One engineer even suggested creating a floor over the river.
Seriously? We're dwarves! we don't let "rivers" get the best of us! We conquer nature just to spite elves!
Then he mentioned Col. Oltarthad who drowned in the river, Armok rest his soul.
On a lighter note, we struck a deal with the peasants in that they build our fortifications for the good of dwarven kind, and they can eat from our farms.
We even gave the local peasantry rough stones to build with and they've just begun to construct their town. So far they've only built a masonry and I overheard some say that they have plans for a barracks or some such.
I swear it changes current mid season.
This is my first time daming off a river so any ideas are helpful.
If nothing else, what I'll probably end up doing in pumping the water off the map through one of the planned 'aqueducts' rather than over sections of the river. Dry out the middle section and dam that shit right up proper quick. - Dakira

I like the premise, add more maps!

a drawing of Staffrare would look so cool.
It'd look a bit like an oddworld game, specifically oddworld stranger.
I love the town.

It'll be a nice lake when it gets built :)

I'm sure it'll look good when it's finally filled.
I'm not good at damming rivers, so there's a good chance I'll just floor it over and start pumping.

I have the exact same problem with having too many projects to complete. I have about 6 mega projects half completed on my map. Well, good luck with your lake. It looks like its going to be awesome. I might even steal your idea and start a lakeside resort of my own if i tired of my current fortress.

You could always make the unstable ground area another entrance. Instead of walling to the edge, start walling to the east and loop back around somehow, or connect it to part of the landscape. You could even then use the contained empty areas for random things like "housing" for nobles.

I like the idea but part of the story behind this fortress is to build a wall along the Dwarven-Elven-Human border at this site.
Dwarven Lands to the north east, Elven Lands to the west (forest), and Human lands to the south.

Mayor: finally the lake is full. Stop working the pumps.
Urist: Uhh... they work automatically on unlimited power, we'd have to dissemble them to stop them.
Mayor: Ok, do that then
:water moves up to 1/7 on main village:
Urist cancels remove pump: dangerous terrain.
Mayor: ohh F@#$%@#
:Duke mandates a wooden lifeboat:

lol, That would make more sense actually.
What was happening was that the entire town used the dry lake bed for traveling. So when the water came they all had to get used to using the bridges and oh did they hate that at first.

Great idea, congrats on getting the reservoir done :)

This map deserves my first comment ever on DF Map Archive...
everything is so astounding... there's love in this project. I think that is really inspiring to have a story background for the first dwarves, when I master a bit more this game I'll give it a try.
Man, you're an inspiration!!!
