This is the first time I've properly sat down beforehand and planned a fortress. It is concentrated on just two levels, a main level and an accommodation level. I like the way the main level has turned out, but there's a lot of things here that I'll do differently next time.
I had hoped to develop this further, with magma and water channels flowing in the centre of the tomb/living level, but my FPS has dropped to an unplayable level. I suspect the design is at fault.
The first line of defence for the fortress is this bog-standard deathtrap. Retracting bridges dump the offending goblins into the magma below, which can then be quenched using a water dump, then mined out to remove valuable iron and obsidian.
The dining room to the left of the bridges is interesting, because it appears that clear glass windows are now truly transparent. Presence of enemies on the bridges is enough to spam "eat cancelled" messages, which is a useful early warning. - Ambivalence

Ahh... HFS. You should be able to get some of it out without bringing hell down upon your fort. All i'll say is this: the carnage doesn't start after you reach a certain count of things being dug out. So don't be paranoid. Just afraid ;)

There are only two solutions to the HFS problem.
1. Turn off mining and turn on masonry on all the miners and construct a rough stone wall in the passage to the chamber, sealing it.
2. Recruit everybody, and mass them at the pits!
