Mountain-Banners, after the seventh and final year of the great Bridge-building challenge. The points of interest, if seen in order starting with "0. The sheer...", give you a guided tour of the fortress and its construction.
Bridge-building challenge thread (page five, includes 3D images):
Story: "A Journey to Mountain-Banners"
We're at the place where traders (and young Halir in the story "A Journey to Mountain-Banners") arrive. Ballistae, traps with exceptional-quality steel spiked balls, and marksdwarf firing positions guard the lower approaches. At the center of the fort is the lower base of the central tower. Roughly the lower half of the tower between valley floor and the base of the bridge is carved out of a native rock outcropping ideally positioned to serve as the very center of the bridge.
Waterwheels provide 300 units of power for the color-coded pumps that draw river water to the bridge channel. More on this in POA "Water channel".
The spiral staircase (which you may tour by going up a few levels) rises in quarter-revolutions five times around the tower, allowing wagons to reach the depot high above. The statues are of hematite.
