Frozenperplex - 2105 Late Spring by fidelcowstro

Map Description:

Far from the northern shores of the Icy Continent, hidden away on the volcanic Island of Branding, the dwarves of Zasit Uzar, "The Knife of Grottoes," have established a new fortress. The heat from the Fountains of Luster have kept the calm tundra of the island warm enough to support some life - mostly ravens, porcupines, and elk.

In relative safety and peace, the dwarves of Frozenperplex can freely pursue their architectural theories regarding ice, as well as implement a huge military for a certain future project.

Point of Interest: Raven Rookery

There are better options for eggs and meat and bones, but I plan to mod ravens to be war creatures - just so flocks of the tame creatures can eventually fly into battle with the soldiers in the next fortress. Every little bit will help. - fidelcowstro

Δ 134. Experiment #1
This method of casting a giant ice block is based on keeping the water heated during every step of the process where it is above ground. Water is pumped up from the aquifer and on to the previously cast layer of ice, while a layer of magma is held directly above it. The fluids are separated by a basalt block bridge.

Problems have already been encountered. For example, in this biome, it is apparently too cold during autumn, winter, and spring to keep water liquid above ground, even when heated with magma - testing is still underway. Early trials have been... erratic. - fidelcowstro
Δ 106. Experiment #2
This is an exploration of the so-called "bucket brigade" method, by which dwarves manually haul water, bucket by bucket, to the construction site. So far, this method has proven far more successful in nearly every way. However, I still have doubts regarding the maximum potential of such a method - more tests are necessary to determine if this method could be used for a project of the sheer scale that I have in mind. - fidelcowstro
Δ 152. Magma Furnaces
The glass furnaces here, upon the rim of the caldera, provide the rest of the fortress with the vast majority of its furniture and finished goods. There's also the magma forge and smelter, although the forge uses a plain steel anvil, and not the artifact gold anvil that was created last year.

Even though artifacts are magma-proof (and indestructible), I guess a gold anvil still can't be used with magma. - fidelcowstro
Δ 151. Barracks/Statue Garden
This is where the relatively large and novice military of Frozenperplex is centered. As well, a good deal of civilians mill about here, viewing the masterfully crafted statues that line the walls. - fidelcowstro
Δ 150. The Main Hall
This large chamber contains most of Frozenperplex's industry. Workshops line the edge of the meager dining hall, and the only current dormitory is in the far southwestern corner. Food production is here, too. Note the predominance of green glass products everywhere. - fidelcowstro
Δ 150. The Vampire Mayor and the Goblin Werebear
In 2103, a dwarf immigrated to the fortress and was immediately elected mayor. Stukos Vabôklolum (Stukos Orbswoods) was obviously a creature of the night, as evidenced by both his list of former civil memberships as well as the fact that he drained the blood of another dwarf in plain view in the middle of the fortress. Subsequently, he was imprisoned in a prison of clear glass windows in the middle of the dining hall, so that he could happily meet with diplomats and unhappy citizens.

The white "g" just outside the mayor's cage is a werebear, captured in one of the many cage traps that trace across the mountainside. I may have some future use for him, but at this point he seems happy to sit in his green glass cage for all to see. - fidelcowstro
¶ 150. Welcome to Frozenperplex
This fortress is largely preparation for another fortress. In considering the challenge of building a large, natural ice wall fortress, I realized that some experimenting was going to be needed. Naturally, I couldn't hold the experiments in the actual fort that would be creating the megaconstruction - I'd rather decide on the method of construction before embarcation.

Besides, to make things harder for myself, I'm limiting the other fortress to a military-only defense. Raised bridges may or may not be ok when the time comes, I haven't decided that yet. So, there's also a large military training program to improve the general migrant pool that the new fort will have to draw on.

When the time comes (I've got a solution to my construction problem and my military is ridiculously well-equipped and trained), I'll abandon Frozenperplex and start another fort. - fidelcowstro

Δ 13. Dry Caverns
The caverns that lie beneath this region (this world has only one cavern layer) are dry, strewn with lifeless mud and deep red blood thorns. The dwarves have installed dozens of cage traps throughout the tunnels, in the hopes that fierce animals might be captured and tamed - or at least turned against the enemies of the mountainhome. - fidelcowstro
