A lesser known fact: Merchants have a hard time finding Dwarf Forts. They are usually hidden in the ground, and caravans can circle mountains for months trying to find those blasted holes.

It's a phyllite tower with fortifications. I've set a burrow on the 1st floor. During an ambush, I order my markdwarfs to defend this burrow. It's pretty efficient ^^.
