Bentshield - 2 Early Spring by Salmeuk

Map Description:

The beginning of Bentshield's second year! 19 dwarfs reside within the rough stone halls that intersect this mountain. A small population of pigs, yaks and dogs grows slowly every year, but will eventually provide meat and hide for the cooks and craftsmen. Our military consists of two amateurs, one of which even lacks a weapon. Lets us pray that the goblins have not discovered our fortress.

Point of Interest: Odon Adilasdug's tomb

The first and only dwarf to fall. His death is a tragic tale: while constructing the eastern wall, he was ambushed by a massive rattlesnake. Before he could react, the snake had sunk it's fangs deep into his neck. Our miner smashed in the snakes head before it could do any more damage, but he was left with a rotting wound. He perished a week later. - Salmeuk

Nice use of terrain. I wonder how this will grow out.

Thanks! I always find I enjoy designing a fortress around the terrain, which usually means a bunch of deleted fortresses when I realize the embark isn't as interesting as I had thought.

Terrain adds character to what might be a dry, clinical design.

Yes. Somehow I tend to always build on hillsides, and end up with a similar layout of projecting off the bottom of the hill and gradually terracing and walling off the uphill sections. It works and can look elegant, but I should work on a more interesting design.

Yeah the positioning is mind-boggling. The central pit is in my opinion dwarfish. It suddenly reminds me of "This Is Sparta!" Are you planning to use that quarry space to living space later, or do you prefer more compact fortresses?

Mmm, the quarry space is just quarry space. I do like compact fortresses, but I usually let the lay of the land guide my designs. I still have yet to give my dwarfs proper living quarters. I imagine that will come sometime this year. Luckily, my incomplete dining hall keeps them fairly happy.

yup, this fortress tantrum spiraled and died. I might reclaim it in the future, but I usually hate cleaning up the massive amounts of trash scattered all over the place so probably not.

I started a new fortress, which has equally interesting if not better terrain. Just uploaded the first map now.
