  Surrounded by workshops and stockpiles, and a stone bridge going east across the river. This mesa was isolated from the rest of the map for a few years but it's generally all left open now that I have a large military.

  This was harder to do than I expected. Dwarves are capricious when water's involved. I had to build a powered 15-pump diverter to weaken the river's flow enough to complete this dam. - Noble Digger

  15 wooden pumps swallow as much river water as they can, pushing it down these ramps into the aquifer where it disappears. They are presently turned off, having served their only purpose a few seasons ago when I finished damming the river waterfall (temporarily). My next project is to install an underworks drain to empty the river right near the source tiles so I can completely drain it and install various floodgates, hatches, bridges, etc. as well as recovering corpses. - Noble Digger

  Without stone for mechanisms, I couldn't discern a safe way to breech the aquifer in the first year, so instead I set up an extensive soil dwelling for the starting dwarves and the first few immigrant waves, using all wooden furniture and blocks. Little did I know how long this would be the fortress center. Fortunately, it's reasonably efficient, even if cramped and sandy. - Noble Digger

  It turns out I sort of over-defended this place. Elephants are no longer murderous purveyors of meaningless warfare, and often walk around the trading merchants without even interrupting any labors. There are no goblins or kobolds (yet), perhaps due to a low population cap (8000) during world gen. - Noble Digger

  All these wooden bridges have exposed aquifer tiles underneath and can be raised up toward the center. Once properly attached to levers, these can be raised to allow the river into these rooms to drain, effectively stopping the flow. I still have some engineering work to do as far as determining the safest and most long-term effective means of breaking into the river itself from down here. Without deaths, if possible. - Noble Digger

  Bridge-building is dangerous work for fools. The guy on the left is haunting the fortress, despite having a sarcophagus and engraved slab dedicated to him. - Noble Digger

  This was my first attempt at getting through the aquifer, and I learned to my dismay that there were TWO aquifer layers. Now this one, useless forever, has been converted to a sort of garden. - Noble Digger

  I had to save scum 4-5 times to get this right. Double-aquifers can be tricky. It also doesn't help that the un-mined mudstone tiles here are somehow aquifer tiles, as well (sand walls on the opposite side of them). - Noble Digger

  While it was built second, this one's closer to the surface, so I'm fitting it with artifact vaults. A few are already locked up with artifacts inside. - Noble Digger

  Hard at work storing all the ☼2400 wooden garbage my dwarves have made, aside from the furniture which is helping prevent tantrum spirals up in the dining hall.
  
  The one on the left is a mini-forge. Hurray for stonecrafters, I guess. At least it's worth ☼145000! - Noble Digger

  This one was excavated and smoothed first, and is already hard at work storing furniture, along with bones and other discarded animal bits. - Noble Digger

  These ones don't seem too dangerous... But they're staying locked up until I have time to build a labyrinth to imprison whichever Forgotten Beast decides to show up first. - Noble Digger

  There are three quarries like this on the map, which will serve as stockpiles, histories, and artifact vaults. This is the deepest one, above the Lower Caverns. - Noble Digger

  Up in the roof of the upper caverns. This was the first bit of stone I purposely quarried after getting through the aquifer. - Noble Digger

  Oh god. The GCS are everywhere. Get my bricks and mortar, we're initiating a NOPEOCALYPSE. By which I mean... Sealing it off. - Noble Digger

  Oops. The magma was actually one level deeper than I thought it to be. I suppose I'll leave this room here as a place where bucket slaves can drop cold, refreshing water on the dwarves working the foundry furnaces. What could go wrong? - Noble Digger

• Δ 24. 40. Foundry and Ore Stockpile

  The addition of wagons and minecarts came along with a massive boost to the weight of things made out of metal and stone. It now takes a very, very long time for a dwarf to haul a stone around. To help combat this, I create very small stockpiles with 3 wheelbarrows each, but it only helps with about 25% of hauling jobs, because a dwarf will spend 3 months hauling a stone by hand rather than coming to get a wheelbarrow first, making the trip take 1000% as long to complete...
  
  There are food stockpiles here to help keep the furnace operators where they belong. This also doesn't work. I've seen them run out of this room to the main liquor stockpile when they're thirsty. Bastards... - Noble Digger
