My fifth and most succesfull fort. layout is made to maximise efficiency, and the outer defenses should be enough to repell most invasions (had they actually tried once the gate (steel grates) are down.
Note that I have choosen to mine all exploratory shafts outside the main fortress to avoid having multiple entrances. The Castle is the only entrance to the fort.

The only entrance to the fort is through these classic medieval style gates. The bridge can off course be drawn, but there are also steel grates wich enables shooting through the entry without lifting the bridge (for example if one desires to open up the gates and make an assault. - Quift
