Weatherwires - Lower Fort - 184 Early Spring by fidelcowstro

Map Description:

In the year 135, work began on a massive excavation project, between the surface and the top cavern layer. Now, nearly half a century later, work on the dome - a hemispherical area housing a dwarven city, hewn from raw stone - is nearing completion.

However, due to a terrible blight of unknown origin, no new dwarves have been born into the fortress for nearly twenty years. No new immigrants or caravans have arrived at the fort for some time, so the dwarves of Weatherwires have come to realize that they are, indeed, the last remnant of the Merchant of Echoing.

Point of Interest: GH: Laborlured

Once a proud clan of 8 children, the Laborlured clan has dwindled to a single member - the youngest brother, Onol Closechannels. The guild has suffered many losses since the dwarves moved into the dome permanently - many tables are sadly vacant, and the guildhall is not as busy as it once was.

Spore trees were used exclusively for the Laborlured guildhall. - fidelcowstro

I have. It looks fantastic in Overseer. You can't see more than a small portion in Stonesense, but it does give a good idea of scale, in any case. There's a thread on the forum (http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=93279.120) with some screenshots in it.

Δ 145. RQ: Queen Domas
The highest suite of rooms in the fortress is occupied by Domas Tickcities, widow of the duke Kogsak Murdershot. With Kogsak dead, with no other royal figures since the year 18 (when the last queen died), Domas has been recognized as the last bit of royalty in the entire civilization, and thus should be queen.

The levers operate hatches at the top of the dome, which can be used to flood the tops of buildings with water. This muddies those surfaces, and lets subterranean vegetation grow, forming urban parks. - fidelcowstro
Δ 137. RQ: Prince Asmel
The royal quarters of the heir apparent feature a bedroom with grated floors, over an excavated hematite vein. When the dome floods with magma, the vein fills as well, and the room is lit and heated from beneath the grates.

Currently, the Prince Asmel Deathchannels, of clan Murdershot is sparring in the adjacent room, learning how to wield an adamantine battleaxe. - fidelcowstro

This room is a crude miniaturization of the main dome. Levers in this room correspond (sometimes) to doors, hatches, or pumps in other parts of the fortress. - fidelcowstro
Δ 135. RQ: Princess Cog
The princess Cog Archwayward, of clan Murdershot, is a legendary engraver, responsible for countless masterpieces around the fort. Her quarters are half carved out of rock, half built out of earthenware and clear glass bricks. When the dome floods, it forms a pool in the center of the upper room. - fidelcowstro
¶ 133. Central Mesa
This structure is the hub of the entire lower fortress. Sealable passages connect the mesa to the eight guildhalls. Exterior roads lead to and from the hub, weaving their way between, under, and through towers. To the east is a winding, free-standing road that leads to the sealed passage, and the upper fortress, though it is currently clogged with magma. There is also a deep passage which leads to Murdershot Citadel, to the north.

Atop the mesa is a tall circular structure, bearing a few statues depicting gods of the fortress. The mesa itself bears statues depicting laboring dwarves: the founding of Weatherwires in 126. The magma in the center was collected when the dome was first flooded, and can be drained at any time with the pull of a lever (this is one of the dome's two drains).

Inside the structure are workshops and food stockpiles. - fidelcowstro
Δ 133. GH: Bookpuzzled
The small Bookpuzzled clan presides over a sizable burrow carved out of the top layers of the southwest tower. Led by the matriarch Udil Walledpraise, and her son Shorast Towndye, the guildhall is also called home by the scourge-wielding military dwarves (known as the Lone Lashes) and a handful of other warriors.

The pale furniture of the Bookpuzzled guildhall is crafted of tower-cap, harvested from the upper cavern layer itself. - fidelcowstro

Δ 132. GH: Gloveowners
The Gloveowners clan is old, but was never large. The patriarch, Goden, died during the great tantrum spiral of 135, and was survived by his wife, Kib Waxpaddled, and his eldest daughter, Cog Hammerfuture. The guildhall is also home to Åblel Roughnessposts, the last survivor of the once-numerous clan Throwerlens. Out of the eight children, six are dead (as are the parents), and Zuglar Fountainclinches was snatched away by goblins years ago.

The dense tables and chairs in the Gloveowners guildhall are crafted from blood thorn, sickening to behold. - fidelcowstro
Δ 131. GH: Lashhushed
Situated near the top of the spiral staircase that leads down to the Jungleslings guildhall, the Lashhushed guildhall is home to a mere six surviving dwarves. Out of those six, five are clan members, which currently makes it the second largest guild.

The Lashhushed guildhall is well-furnished with finely-grained fungiwood. - fidelcowstro
Δ 130. GH: Gearguild
The Gearguild clan was once the largest clan in the history of the fort, at one point having thirteen living children. Just under half that number remain, and the father is dead, but they are still the most numerous clan in the fort.

The guildhall is appropriately large, and the furniture is crafted of stunningly red goblin-cap. - fidelcowstro
Δ 122. GH: Languagemetal
One of the youngest clans, led by the patriarch Eral Languagemetal the Lonesome Square of Furnaces. Eral is a fortress hero with 24 notable kills, a member of the mace-wielding Silvery Skunks. His wife is dead, and he has two children: Urdim Lovetrumpets and Kol Claspedrelief. Kol has the distinction of being the youngest dwarf in the fortress, having been born on the 6th of Galena in the year 157. Since then, no dwarves have been born.

The Languagemetal guildhall is furnished with tables and chairs made of inky black-cap, and is situated deep in the dome, adjacent to the refuse pile. - fidelcowstro
Δ 121. GH: Jungleslings
Although it houses the only remnant of the Vesselplayed clan (a planter by the appropriately named Melbil Boneguild), this guildhall is known primarily by the name of Jungleslings. Avuz Jungleslings and his fearsome wife, Logem Wavemansion the Prime Persuaders of Work (captain of the sword-wielding Silvery Princesses) are the only two members of their clan. One of the last clans to form, in the year 150 Logem bore a daughter, who was named Obok Tacticlens. who died shortly after growing to adulthood. The married couple never had another child.

The Jungleslings guildhall is perpetually cold, as it's furniture is carved from icy nether-cap, from deep beneath the earth. - fidelcowstro
Δ 121. Passage to Dome Floor
One of the only ways to reach the cavern. One must pass through the barracks to use this route, which is constantly guarded by legendary military dwarves.

Δ 120. GH: Thunderbridge
The Thunderbridge clan is an old guild, one large and proud, but long fallen from glory. Of the original seven Thunderbridge children, only one remains: the youngest daughter, Urvad Pagekissed. The widowed matriarch, Cerol Lensbeaks, has been the fortress manager for as long as any can remember.

Furniture in the Thunderbridge guildhall is crafted of gaudy purple tunnel tube. It is also situated the closest to the cavern floor, being lower than any other guildhall. - fidelcowstro
