• Δ 170. The Garden of Chaos

  ( 1056 Early Autumn to onwards )
  The simple, walled in location for wood has turned into a CF of all-item stockpiles, mounds of refuse, and caged beasts. To top it off, some jack-hole built a statue garden. I suppose some sunlight, a little water, and the stench of rotting goblin corpses makes for an enjoyable break from digging. - Shouperman

• Δ 170. The Quarry (Top)

  ( 1056 Early Autumn to onwards )
  In a massive undertaking (or under-cutting), this 60x60x11-z-level block is being prepped for collapse. This will provide materials, but more importantly, begins moving earth for the construction of the fort propper. - Shouperman

• Δ 168. The Collapse

  ( 1056 Early Summer to onwards )
  In solemn memory, this location has been flagged for the loss of 3 of Earthengear's miners. A few (dim-witted) dwarves chose to mine out two tiles (to drop a third) by standing on the tile to be dropped. The collapse punctured a few floors below. Reports haven't confirmed whether these holes were caused by the falling rock, or the hardened dwarves who hit bottom. - Shouperman

• 172. Trading Depot

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Because elves are not allowed within Earthengear (on the outside of cages), the depot needed to be constructed outside.
  
  In its current location, a series of bridges allow for A) caravans to reach the depot even while fortress fortifications are in place, B) allow the depot to be cut-off from the outside and/or the inside of the fortress. This air-lock-like arrangement allows visitors to find safe(-ish) haven at the fortress without weakening defenses, and then allows the dwarves to utilize the depot once it has been cut-off from outside forces.
  
  The often unmentioned benefit of this configuration is that the depot can be placed on "lock-down" if suspicious trades have occurred until such a time as the mayor sees fit to open it back up. The length of this lock-down may or may not depend on the amount of food and drink carried by the suspected thieves. - Shouperman

• 171. Outdoor Crops

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  (No longer) Currently the only crops, the dwarves farm ($#!^-tons of) strawberries, prickle berries, and longland grass. These provide a nice variety of food (not so much) and drink (jackpot). Originally intended to be the only outdoor region of the fortress, the area was walled in with fortifications and equipped with refuse pile, graveyard, well (now dismantled) and trade depot (relocated). - Shouperman

• 170. Small Gear Prototypes

  ( 1054 Early Winter to onwards )
  Originally placed here as prototypes, it has come to my attention that these may be too small for use. Larger form factors, like that of the pump stack, may be the defacto, with even larger making up some impressive components. More planning needs to be completed. - Shouperman

• 169. Cave of the Dead

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Originally dug out in 1050, the Cave of the Dead was a hole dug in the side of the mountain where the deceased would return to the earth. With the increase in goblin activity, a safer route was necessary (or, at least more space). The newly constructed wall where the original entrance stood has blended into the smooth finish the masons are providing to the sacred place. Thankfully, there are far, far more coffins than required. - Shouperman

• 168. Furniture Overflow

  ( 1054 Early Winter to onwards )
  The originally planned well site was converted into a overflow pile for furniture. No particular reason besides a lack of space. - Shouperman

• 169. The Cluttered Workshops

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Currently, the workshops are only located on a single level. They were hastily built for the initial year, but have yet to expand. Through stockpile management, things have ended up in an appropriate enough places. - Shouperman

• 168. Barracks and Danger Room

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  The first squad, The Allied Busts, resided exclusively in the barracks, and practiced in the ornate yet treacherous danger room. The militia captain, a great dwarve with a fondness for polarbear leather helms, and vulture leather armor, was a notable swordmaster after a year or so of practicing in the danger room. The original door placement (as seen in 1053) made it too easy for pets/children (same thing?) to wander in. It was relocated to reduce strain on the training equipment. - Shouperman

• 168. Catacomb Proper

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Because a route needed to be dug to the Cave of the Dead, a formal catacomb was designated. Individuals who have proven themselves extraordinarily worthy may find themselves with tombs in the catacomb. This will likely be the military, with sections specifically for individual squads. That, and pesky nobles who want tombs, like the lovely baroness. - Shouperman

• 168. Hospital

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  The hospital, long overdue, despite the resident's current resolve to either live long healthy lives, or quite the opposite; there are no dwarves living with wounds in this place. It houses two wells, even though the communal well rooms flank the entrance to this room. - Shouperman

• 168. The Great Hall

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  The dining hall in the center of the fortress. It acts as a meeting room during siege, and the place for the best parties (with exception to the statue garden, but only if the sun and vomit are something you enjoy at parties). Flanked by food and drink stores with access to crops, everything food should end up in this area. - Shouperman

• 167. Animal Pens

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  To prevent the animals from wandering around the fortress and causing trouble ::cough::eating fps::cough:: they have been placed in pens to allow for a comfortable and breeding friendly lifestyle. Their offspring are diligently placed into the local cage for care until they are of appropriate age to be released (to the butcher).
  
  To restrict breeding, the 'primes' can be placed into cages until repopulation is desired. - Shouperman

• Δ 163. Exotic Animal Pens

  ( 1056 Early Autumn to onwards )
  While facilities exist for livestock and useful animals, more exotic breeds are brought here for two purposes. 1) To preserve and populate a rare species. 2) To kill goblins. The citizens regularly break out into viloent discussion over the ethics of sending rare breeds into combat against goblins; most are offended that the animals can shred a goblin whilest they cannot.
  
  Although the cages appear empty, the elves were kind enough to bring a Giant Eagle and some Cougars, who are experts at stealth. - Shouperman

• 167. Extended Barracks

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Needing more than just a few well trained fighters, the barracks was expanded to provide archery training, increased storage for equipment, and facilities for war animals. These are primarily utilized by the Splattered Bodices, the marksdwarves. - Shouperman

• 165. Jail Cells

  ( 1054 Early Winter to onwards )
  The jail cells were placed adjacent to the Pit of Trials so the inmates can hear the shreeks and sounds of pain; I want them to contemplate on how much fun they're missing out on.
  
  For some reason, one of the jail cells has become a popular party location due to it's fashionable green restraint. - Shouperman

• 166. Pit of Trials

  ( 1053 Early Winter to onwards )
  Here, captured goblins are dumped into the bowl below. The trial is less for them, and more for the marksdwarves or on-site axedwarves, who compete to earn the treasured rankings of fastest kill, most bloody kill, and most dwarvetastic (the lack of a verb is intentional; these dwarves are flippin' insane).
  
  Security is tight; several bridges are utilized to allow access to different areas, and the only exit is within the barracks. - Shouperman

• Δ 159. The Pump Stack

  ( 1056 Early Autumn to onwards )
  This tower is being constructed to provide water at various heights for future casting needs. Due to the winter freeze, reliable water and power can only be produced during the wamer months.
  
  As you may notice, the placement of the pumps and resevoir has been relocated from the original placement. This shift allows for better drainage (when necessary). The dwarven architects took the opportunity to add a stylistic flair to the super-structure, a precusor for what is to follow. - Shouperman

• Δ 159. The Quarry (Bottom)

  ( 1056 Early Autumn to onwards )
  The lone support that will (eventually) allow the mass above to be collapsed. Before collapse, additional digging may be done to allow the mass to crash through several more levels below. - Shouperman
