Moonsyrups - 24 Late Autumn by Noble Digger

Map Description:

A handful of long, slow, fps-dragging years later, Moonsyrups reaches a new point of maturity.

Giant Cave Spiders are now housed in the spider lair temple, the entire magmaworks is completed and -damn near- ready to turn on (i'm replacing some of the floodgates and mechanisms with iron ones in places that don't really need them, but better safe than sorry).

Check out the POIs for stuff new in this release. Note that the entire fortress has been gutted of Basalt and Alunite doors and these are being trash-compacted in favor of Obsidian and Iron masterworks by Art and Chataya, the legendary Mason and Blacksmith.

Point of Interest: 24.6. Subterranean Highroad

The old chasm road to the North Cliff was very hard for the dwarves to pathfind through and killed my FPS worse than usual, so i dug this nice, long, straight path which runs approximately the same direction only a level higher. FPS improved by 10 frames immediately when it finished, as dwarves were dumping stone in the North Cliff rampart at the time. - Noble Digger

Holy huge embark Batman!

What FPS do you get? I'm seriously impressed by you CPU if you get good FPS on this map.

Really cool map, though, I really like the winding tunnel from the cliff face to the glacierside castle.

You know, this fortress was intended to be my "final DF40 fortress blowout" before Toady finishes the next release... I chose this large embark thinking I'd dick around a bit but it ended up getting good FPS. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 gigs of ram and it runs smoothly at 35+, slowing into the low 20s when dumping is going on. I haven't started moving liquids at all, which is going to CHOKE it.

The fort is playable despite its size because most of that size isn't being used for anything. :D

Δ 26. 24.5. The Catacomb
Bone storage got out of hand and I don't really use Bone Bolts for training anymore since they're all Legendary, so I figured I'd go the route of Metalskull and inter the innumerable dead in the rock tunnel behind the fortress. Since this tunnel isn't used for travel to the North Cliff anymore, it was a perfect application for the unused space and I'll probably lock all the doors to the catacomb once it's full enough. - Noble Digger
Δ 26. 24.9. Glacier Anchors
I got scared that the glacier might slide away from the mountain one day so I began "pinning" it in place with these massive 3x3 Alunite pillars. Two are finished and they extend all the way down into the bedrock. I'll probably only do two more. - Noble Digger
Δ 25. 24.A. New Wardrobe Area
This large diamond-shaped room is the focus of goods storage in the fort now. On this level, finished goods other than clothing of all type and quality are stored and sorted through. Some are dumped away but this is essentially permanent storage for things I like. Below are stockpiles for Exceptional nonmetal weapons, armor, and clothing, and another for exceptional metal goods. One level above, on the glacier itself, is where exceptional nonmetal furniture is kept.

Masterworks of various types have their own stockpiles deeper underground and anything below exceptional goes to a trash pile where it can be quickly trash compacted. - Noble Digger
Δ 24. 24.7 Obsidian Masonary
Art comes here to turn Obsidian boulders into doors and shit. The pile in the center is where obsidian from the transmutation smelters is dumped, and the stockpile here is turned off so he just takes stones from that pile instead of causing extra hauling jobs moving them 2-3 tiles onto the stockpile. - Noble Digger
Δ 24. 24.8. Visitors' Lodge
Honored guests are housed in the log cabin here in this cavernous rectangular room. The ceiling above is the upper surface of the Glacier; four ventilation holes let a bit of light and air down into the tunnels. - Noble Digger
Δ 23. 24.2. New Bedroom Annex
This room, excavated and smoothed only a few dwarfweeks ago, connects 12 new bedrooms to the fortress to serve immigrants and children. Population is capped at 45 but for some reason I'm always struggling to house everyone. This fort has seen a lot of death for being low-pop and decently-well-equipped.

All the bedrooms are being fitted with masterwork Beds and Doors and next up will be replacing the basalt tables with Obsidian masterworks. This may have to wait until I can get a crude obsidian factory going; my first inkling is to use the moat as a casting pit, since that'll be easier.

Anyway, the hallway below this annex was dug to support the Spider Lair, so all that miasma is probably detectable when you cross the grate-filled room below heading to your bedroom. :) - Noble Digger
Δ 22. 24.4. Magma Forge Underworks Pumping Station
By the time magma arrives here, it has traveled a long distance from the bottom level of the volcano and up a pumping shaft, down the Magmazines, out the Magmazine pumps and up the map a considerable distance. This is the final stretch: Magma here is pumped up by 5 Windmills in the main courtyard and injected into the iron-barred guts of the magma forge. :) - Noble Digger
¶ 19. 24.0. Magma Temple
This level has been refitted with masterwork iron floodgates and redesigned to use 6 levers on each side (each lever opens the two floodgates on either side of one of the 12 magma tubes). Lots of furniture refitting is going on lower in the system as well, but all pumps and power-related hardware are completely done; In short, if I REALLY wanted to, I could dig 3 channels and turn most of this stuff on right now!

I estimate another 2 years of work before I'll be happy and comfortable turning it on. - Noble Digger
Δ 15. 24.1. Spider (and kitten) Lair
The three Giant Cave Spiders captured beneath the chasm bridge live in this cavern connected to the temple above by cobaltite ramps. However, the spiders have been fed recently (~7 puppies, 5 elk, 4 horses, and a LOT of kittens) and the whole temple is a shit-storm of miasma. The spiders tend to go back underground after they eat. While the spiders refuse to eat the kittens, I imagine that the instant they become adults they're dead meat. For now, the kittens coexist happily with the murderous cave spiders, known now as Tomehailed, Glovedwound, and Questinch. I intend to feed them until they each have lengthy titles and renown. - Noble Digger
Δ 15. 24.3. HFS
...is right the fuck here. I had to redesign this room a bit to avoid it. Fortunately when I had broken through it I had literally JUST saved, so save scumming wasn't a matter of dearth to me.

If my GCS breed virulently enough I may let them loose on the HFS and see what happens, it should be easy to breach it with a channel from above and stand back to watch. - Noble Digger
