Rarepaper - 205 Early Spring by sirbobsalot

Map Description:

The Fortress of Rarepaper: also known as the Fortress of Solitude. Haven't had one single thief, snatcher, or ambush since striking the earth. This is my first game playing on an island, so I guess that's normal? That's going to make testing my fortress defenses (when I get around to building them) a little difficult. =P

The main fortress is coming along, and is finally starting to look like a secret volcano lair. In a break from earlier maps, I've gone for something a little more spread out this go around. Larger chambers, vaulted ceilings, and avenues between sections of the fortress. Efficiency-wise it aint so hot, but it definitely feels more dwarfy.

Point of Interest: 19: Overview of the Main Floor

LOTS more spread out than I normally do. Also the first fort I've done in a whilethat wasn't laid out to be N/S or E/W symmetrical.

Awesome fort! One of the few that I've seen built into the side of a mountain that actually seem like it was built into the side of a mountain.

Δ 44. 01: Old Fortress
Now mostly abandoned. Only active bits in there now are the seven founders' quarters, which are going to be replaced with significantly nicer digs deeper in the mountain sometime this year. - sirbobsalot
Δ 39. 02: Fortress Entrance
Once the bridge over the crater is completed, this will be the main entrance to the fortress. The North and South openings are going to go to towers to allow marksdwarfs to fire on anything trying to enter. - sirbobsalot
Δ 39. 03: Statues of the Founders
Statues representing the original seven founders of Rarepaper. Right now they're just plain stone, which is a bit of a travesty since I've got some native platinum ore ready to go. No legendary masons yet, so waiting till I've got someone with a high enough skill to reliably bang out masterpieces. - sirbobsalot
Δ 39. 04: Quantum Pet Cage
Early on I agressively assigned dogs and cats as pets to the early dwarfs in the fortress. That set up enough breeding pairs that I'm getting a couple of litters each season; all of which are going into this one cage.

Once the defenses are up and going, I'm going to link some emergency pressure plates to this cage, so that anything making it past the defenses will spring some disgustlingly high number of pets into the fray. - sirbobsalot
Δ 35. 12: Supervisor's Offices
A number of large offices are adjacent to the Main Plaza. Once I've got a healthy glass industry going, the wall between the two will be replaced by clear glass windows so they can keep an eye on what's happening below. - sirbobsalot
Δ 34. 13: Overhead Walkways?
There's enough room up in the vaulted ceilings that I'm tempted to put an overhead walkway. It wouldn't be terribly useful since most everything is in lower levels, but it'd look kind of cool. - sirbobsalot
¶ 33. 05: Main Plaza
The ramp from above drops out here, and this is pretty much the center of everything in the fortress. Once the entrance is complete the trade depot will be moved here, instead of it's current position perched at the top of the mountain by the old fort.

Extends upwards several z-levels to give it an appropriately cavernous feel. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 06: Dining Hall
Main dining hall for the fortress. Seats 72 at once which should be plenty for a fortress cap of 200. Lots of left over room for milling about and placing statues/artifacts. Now all I've got to do is get a mood that doesn't produce a leather ring or a bone cup and I'll have someplate to display the resulting artifact. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 07: Food Prep Chamber
All the food prep takes place here. The farms are one level up in the sand, and the stockpile for raw plants and such is one level below. At some point I'll dug up or down an additional level so there's someplate to put the butchers/tanners. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 08: Housing Tower 1
2x2 rooms for 96 dwarfs. Since I've currently got about 130 in the fort that means I've got a good number who are sleeping on the floor in the barracks a couple of levels up. - sirbobsalot

Future site of Housing Tower 2. That's one of the priorities for this season. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 10: Noble Housing Tower
This is where most (if not all) of the nobles suites are going to go. The place isn't all that spiffy yet, since I was kind of caught by surprise when all the nobles showed up in one immigrant wave. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 15: Craft Chamber 1 & 2
The finishing touches were placed on these right before the new season, so that's why you see a mass of dwarfs moving items to the new stockpiles.

Going for great big stockpiles, with smaller workshop clusters underneath. Once I've got labor free after fixing the housing situation, I plan on digging these deeper for an extra couple levels of storage and workshops. - sirbobsalot
Δ 33. 18: Found the Aquifer
This was going to be another crafting chamber, but now I don't know. I finally hit the aquifer that I saw on the embark screen.. or at least the edge of it.

Never actually dealt with an aquifer before, so I plan on treading very carefully and save-dumping often. =P - sirbobsalot

Δ 32. 11: Noble Self-Defense Lever
For particularly troub-- paranoid nobles, the lever in their bedroom can be linked to the door. This allows them to safely seal themselves inside for protection.

Sadly, the first hammerer could not be talked into opening the door again, so they starved to death inside. - sirbobsalot
Δ 32. 14: Magma Heating System
A series of iron/bauxite floodgates allows lava into the decorative channels around the base. Initially they were useful to limit the areas that were filling to smaller chunks to evaporation wouldn't cause a problem. Later on when I might be getting involved in some big magma projects, I can close them up (like they are now) to prevent the channels from flowing back into the crater when the level drops.

Going one level up you can see I've made some progress on grating up the open channels. I've already had one baby decided to go for a magma swim, so covering them up to hopefully prevent a repeat.

Babies don't fit through grates, do they? =P - sirbobsalot
Δ 31. 16: Workshop Magma Power
I like to have the magma fall in from a higher level to fill the workshop level. It causes the area to fill quicker (so less waiting around for a steady depth 4 to start working), and because once it's full you don't have to worry about low levels in the crater causing it to all drain out again. - sirbobsalot

Yeah, I don't really know where I was going with this either. I think I was planning on making these both food stockpiles, but honestly I've never even gotten close to filling up the two I've already got.

The diagonal hallway linking the two is to make it so haulers can move prepared meals and drinks directly to the stockpile under the dining hall without diverting through the rest of the fortress. - sirbobsalot
