In the past three and a half years, much progress has been made. All of the rooms in the tower have been excavated (except for the magma chamber which will go beneath the metalsmithing workshop floor), and most of the exterior has been carved away and smoothed.
The first Baron who arrived at Rhymestakes was extremely unfortunate enough to have preferences for both crystal glass (checked on embark, and there are no rock crystals) and Adamantine (we're in the middle of a tropical forest, not a mountain), so he and his wife were both executed - the replacement Baroness and Baron Consort seem to have more realistic tastes.
All of the industries are being moved above ground so that my dwarves will never more need to deal with cave adaptation, aside from maybe my planters. The old underground forging area will eventually be repurposed into an obsidian factory, should I ever manage to run out.
( 315 Early Spring → onwards )
The fortress's underground farms originally resided here, and here they will remain, albeit irrigated and considerably expanded. - Quietust

Very exciting indeed. This is a new trick Quietust.

I wouldn't say it's a new trick - players have been casting obsidian towers for years.

In case of armageddon, break glass. Very nice.
