Cometnet - 212 Early Summer by KenboCalrissian

Map Description:

Cometnet, one year later. More work has been done on the castle, just fought off another goblin siege, experimenting with some wolf-cage-based traps.

I don't plan on posting regular updates for this fortress, but I'm posting this because I'm starting a story on the Bay12 forums and I wanted an accurate point of reference.

Point of Interest: Atis Eralbomrek, Baby

Δ 16. Castle Cometnet, Main Gate
This is the front gate for Castle Cometnet. The entrance is a drawbridge set 1 z-level above the ground, and fortifications will be built along the walls. The lever on the right controls this bridge as well as the one in the rear, and the lever on the left controls the moat floodgates. - KenboCalrissian

Δ 15. Wolf Trap East
One of two wolf cage traps I attempted. The idea is that when goblins attack, I pull a lever that opens the cage and dumps roughly 30 wolves directly into the fray. I've protected them with a hatch, and started to construct a grate with walls around it because I don't know whether or not the wolves will suffocate within their confines. Not sure how that works.

I had a chance to test it just recently (note the blood just above from a battle), but I pulled the lever too late. My dwarves had already chased the enemy away by the time the wolves came out. Also, the wolves didn't seem to be in any hurry to leave the spot where the cage was, maybe because there weren't enough enemies nearby at the time.

Perhaps this would be better with war dogs? - KenboCalrissian

Δ 14. Moats (In Progress
A network of moats and tunnels is being constructed along the walls of Castle Cometnet. The Floodgates are being connected to a lever at the front gate. Once complete, I'll channel out the connections to the dwarfmade river so that water flow can be controlled.

My reasoning is that during a siege, the moats will keep building destroyers away from my walls. If an enemy is pushed into the channel and survives, I'll flood the moats to drown them.

There are escape hatches which will also be linked to a lever. These are used in case my own dwarves get knocked into the channel (in which case I won't flood the moat), and also for gathering equipment that drops down inside. - KenboCalrissian

Δ 14. Wolf Trap South
The second of two wolf cage traps. These locations were chosen because they are common entry points for the goblins, but I'm thinking I need to start breeding up a third batch of wolves for the north side of my castle.

I'm mining tunnels to their lairs because I made a mistake with the hatches and levers. If the cage is open, the hatch is open... but if the cage is closed, the hatch is closed, so in my initial setup it was impossible to put the wolves back in their cage! I worry about this as a possible security concern, but we'll see what happens. - KenboCalrissian
