Wasprag - 59 Early Winter by Quietust

Map Description:

HFS SPOILER WARNING!

Victory is mine!

As my miners continued to excavate the raw Adamantine, they encountered an area that sounded hollow underneath, suggesting some sort of chamber. By striking the stone at various points and listening to the reverberations, I was able to determine an optimal point of entry.

Having heard stories of Adamantine being used to seal demons into the earth, I took several precautions, chaining twelve war dogs at the end of the tunnel (from rumors of the tendency of said demons to ambush their foes) and stationing my seven greatest Champion marksdwarves behind them (stocked with hundreds of bolts, plus rations and waterskins).

Once winter began, I ordered one of my miners to pierce the chamber. Almost immediately, the demons marched forth, but my hounds sniffed them out and my archers made short work of them. All in all, thirty fiery demons fell, plus another demon whose bones were later sighted within the chamber itself. My Dungeon Master speculates that she was the leader, misfortunate enough to be incinerated by her own companions. Eight of the dogs were burned to death and a ninth one was severely maimed and had to be euthanized, but the other 3 dogs survived unscathed, along with my marksdwarves. Though they may have been champions in title for many years, they are true champions now.

In other news, shortly after the Dwarven caravan arrived several months ago, I noticed that one of the cage traps at my entrance had been tripped. Suspecting it was yet another raccoon, I took a closer look and found it to be a black bear! In the 29 years this fortress has existed, I have never seen a single black bear in this region, only wolves, raccoons, cougars, mountain goats, and hoary marmots. Given, I did purchase two tamed black bears from an Elven caravan many years ago (and have been breeding them ever since), but I never expected to see a wild black bear in these parts.

Point of Interest: The Pyramid

( 58 Early Winter → onwards )

23 Z-levels tall, made of clear glass blocks (over 3700 total), and filled with magma using a pump stack and pipeline built from over 1300 steel blocks. The front face of the pyramid is appropriately decorated. - Quietust

Holy crap thats cool. How are you gonna get all that magma there? construct a big pumping tower?

I'll build a pump tower extending all the way to the top of the map, then direct its output into a tube that goes down to ground level, through a short tunnel, and into an opening at the bottom of the pyramid. Pump pressure should allow it to fill all the way to the top.

That's a fantastic fortress. Do the fortifications in the tower cap farm actually drain water?

Submitted by: Quietust - 2009-09-28 to 59 Early Winter

Absolutely - in fact, that's exactly why I built them.
