A mini-fortress, made using the 1x1 Fortress hack. Turned out surprisingly well; found a decent vein of each gold and silver, although only 40 or so tiles of hematite, and no other valuable metals.
Here, you can see the trade depot, the farms, the wood stockpile, and the "miscellaneous" (but mostly trade goods) stockpile. You'll also note six consipicuous coffins just off to the side there. When my seven hardy dwarves arrived, there were SIX fire imps and a fire man lurking in this volcano, and while only one dwarf fell to their flames, four others died instantly in the grass fire that erupted. Of the two dwarves left, one fell prey to melancholy within a week, and threw himself in the volcano early that summer, leaving the remaining dwarf (blessedly, one of my miners) to do the entire first year and a half on his own. All the food supplies survived, so he could focus on carving out a storage area and digging out the underground water resevoir. The trade depot area, the main workshop one level down, and the water resevoir two levels below that was dug out by this one dwarf, while he was making stone crafts to sell and draw more immigrants. The gold statue here at the entrance commemorates his effort, and the six diorite coffins are in memory of their sacrifice. - Tiogshi

These nanoforts are always so CUTE.
I'm a little surprised you're storing so many bones (and in such inefficient storage space) with such little real estate to work with. Paranoid about moody dwarf requests?

Yeah, nearly every fort I start I lose at least one would-be Legendary Engraver or Metalworker to a lack of shells or bones.
As for bone efficiency, I use the 50% pattern for bone storage because miasma only travels cardinally, so any bad stink stays contained in its 1x1 "cell". Results in fewer unhappy thoughts during trips to the refuse heaps, which was a big deal on this fortress because of the very high efficiency of my first hunter; see the PoI "Descent Tour: 9".

Yes yes I see. If you aren't above quantum dumping, you could always dump diagonally down a 1 z-level pit zoned for waste disposal and keep all your bones/shells/skulls there.
