No trading with the caravans this year.
The elves made it to the depot, but as usual didn't bring anything useful.
The humans decided to send a seige, in response to the slaughter of their caravan at the hands of the orcs the previous year. Well, I call it a seige - all they did was sit at the edge of the map until I got bored and sent a couple of squads out to deal with them.
Then in the autumn the dwarves arrived, bringing with them some much-needed bauxite. Unfortunately several squads of goblins ambushed the caravan as it was on its way to the depot, so although a few wagons made it inside they soon decided to turn and leave. I tried raising the drawbridge to keep the bauxite-carrying wagon inside, but the mechanisims had failed and the drawbridge remainined open (probably too much 'Pull Lever (R)' when dealing with an earlier orc seige). With the goblins outside now dead, all my dwarves could do is watch as their precious bauxite sailed off into the distance.
Then in the winter the orcs came again. Although I wasn't able to use the drawbridge to seal the fort or split up the invaders, it turns out that a squad or two of champions is all that it really takes as long as the orcs don't arrive all at once.
Construction complete, just need to hook it up to the new lever. - Phlamethrower

Operation GET WELL SOON was a complete success!
By which I mean it failed.
Although it succeeded in generating lots of water and killing a kitten, the water then promptly ran straight down the funnel and out a hole in the bottom of the map.
Well, you learn something new every day.

You managed to make a mini chasm by accident? How freaking cool is that.

Do Dwarves actually freeze if their beds aren't close to magma?

Well, it keeps the orcs out.
Everyone died, BTW. A goblin seige turned up just as the last baby died, so the goblins ended up claiming victory.
