Garlicgrass - 206 Mid Spring by Aquilegia

Map Description:

Progress is getting a lot slower with a lower FPS now. I've had my first real siege, 6 goblins were shot from the gate-towers, 6 were caged in my caged traps. Also the baron, tax-gatherer, hammerer and some other noble has just arrived now and things are going well.

Point of Interest: Future Arena

This is going to be my arena for my dwarves to train on the (currently 6) cage-trapped invaders. Some traps and doors still have to be added and some fortifications have to be carved, but my dwarves are still busy disarming the caged invaders. - Aquilegia

This is actually pretty cool fortress already. :)

Thanks :) I actually read almost the entire wiki before getting started so that might have helped a bit, but I intend to keep playing with this one until I understand also the late-game so my next fortresses won't fail just after I spend days on some magnificent designs for them : )

Δ 16. Towers
Here I've build some above ground defensive works above my main entrance. The towers are connected by staircases to my barracks 'deep' into the fortress for a fast response, negating the long paths with the bridge/maze/trap-system.

The one tile bridge should be permanently raised since this is my counter-attack bridge, but currently my dwarves are linking it to a lever. Since the path from the towers to the outside is very very long (you have to go down into the fortress, passing the trap-mazes when the bridges are up to the top of the hill and then go down again pass the second trap-maze before you can go outside, I decided to build that third tower in the nw and connect it with a bridge.

Now if I wish to counterattack in siege I just have to lower the bridge, unforbid the doors and they can strike at the invaders.

The towers have seen some use with my first siege. My 3 marksdwarves were able to shoot down 6 goblins and 6 others were cage-trapped. My military is still not very efficient. I have 20 legendary wrestlers now, but this will change once (if ever) my smiths are trained up enough. - Aquilegia
Δ 15. Immigrants
Here you can see the new immigration-group. Just after I destroyed that goblin-siege (they're walking over the fresh corpses and blood-pools.. what a nice welcome) they appeared. Included in this immigration-wave are the baroness,consort,tax-gatherer and the dreaded hammerer. Luckily their rooms are fully engraved with masterwork engravings, I only have to furnish them with a few beds and such to keep them permanently ecstatic (at least I hope so.. my mayor seems happy enough)

Only time can tell if these nobles can spell doom for my fortress.. - Aquilegia
Δ 15. Melting Industry
Currently I have twelve (12!) dwarves 24/7 melting bitumous coal, magnetite and melting iron objects to keep up with my iron-leggings-full-time-armoursmith, iron-short-sword-weaponsmith and iron-cage-blacksmith, which I hope to train to high levels for a nice steel industry with armour and weapons and the blacksmith for making nice platinum statues in the future for dining rooms/gardens and such. I have an enormous amount of coal and iron in this map (and quite a bit of platinum (although this might be normal, since this is still my first fortress) so training my smiths might be lucrative, now if only I had magma :(

Each melter has his/her own assigned melter so I can easily swap production between coke,iron and melting the junk of my smiths/from the goblins. The biggest problem is keeping up with the melting of the smiths' forged products.. currently I have around 100+ swords, leggings and cages (each), I hope the smelters will get faster quickly or I have to build even more smelters :O - Aquilegia
Δ 14. Food
Seems I got a problem here: too much food and drink, my stockpiles keep growing and growing (1000 plant, 500 plant, 1500 seeds, lots of other stuff) So now I'm buying dwarven milk from the caravan and I'm cooking meals now (I intend to trade it, but if my dwarves eat it and get more happy thoughts I don't mind).

Also I might have to change something about the farms only growing sunberries and plump-helmet and get a more diversified food-industry when my entrance and military are fully equipped. - Aquilegia

Δ 10. Exploratory Mining
Here my dwarves are busy with exploratory mining and following iron-ore and coal-veins. A surprisingly big amount of coal-veins and tasty magnetite-super-clusters have been found already which are really nice for fuelling my smith-training-program. Apart from this level I haven't done much exploratory mining actually, I still have massive stocks of both coke and iron-ore so there isn't much need really, when there are more important things to regulate (like towers,traps and the metal-industry).

(And I should really find out how macros work.. all this digging is a bit tiring and most important confusing on bigger scales) - Aquilegia
3. Dining Hall

( 204 to onwards )
This is my newest addition to the fortress: The big dining hall. Sadly it's actually TOO big since the 'dining hall' zone doesn't span the entire room. I had to remove a stair and build a table in the middle to cover as much as possible, now only around 5x5 parts on the corners are excluded.

The dining hall can only hold 96 dwarves at the moment if I would only put the tables in the secluded middle parts of the hall (allowing for walking-corridors), although I could of course make it more crowded if I have to. This is my only room currently which is 'royal' but I hope to change this once I got a more efficient and more specialized economy running. Engravings will come later when all my engravers are legendary or when everything is already smoothed. - Aquilegia
Δ 2. Courtyard Housing
Here I have 12 3x3 bedrooms arranged around a 7x7 multifunctional courtyard. It is only a pity that repeating this design would result in a very inefficient pan-cake type of fortress. The courtyards will later be filled with staircases, statues and cages for zoo's and statue-gardens. Some lucky dwarves have a nice vision on the bones of their enemies (the goblin-siegers) who were dropped down the pit and spattered multiple z-levels. (Actually I got the idea to create courtyards when that goblin-instant-death-pit was in the way for my housing project)

Maybe this type of design will be more useful if the 'burrow' system gets implemented so I can keep dwarves in the same column (with workshops located several z-levels up from their bedrooms+a few stockpiles) - Aquilegia
