Clamlips - 22 Mid Autumn by galaban

Map Description:

This is the fortress Clamlips in the year 22, 10 years after embarkation.

This fortress contains two mural/mosaic projects: the First Mural Project, which (as named) was my first mural; and the Grand Mural Project, which is noticeably larger than the first mural and the culmination of the fortress.

This is the final record of the Clamlips fortress.

Point of Interest: First Mural / Mosaic Project

( 18 Mid Autumn → 20 Early Summer )

This is my first mural / mosaic. It's made from constructed floors and roads out of Cobaltite and Orthoclase. The brown floor is constructed Schist flooring.

The dwarf at the center is the icon used for a military dwarf, the coloring indicating a recruit (since that was the color palette available to me).

This is at the bottom of the arena, which is why the rooms above the mural are as they are. I also thought a military dwarf was a good choice for the bottom of the arena. - galaban

Δ 18. Encompassing Road
The microcline (light blue/cyan) road encompasses the entire map. Orthoclase is only used for the road that leads through the main entrance.

It's definitely colorful, but it's also very ugly. Normally I don't go for roads quite this colorful. - galaban
Δ 18. Grand Mural / Mosaic Project

( 19 Mid Winter to 22 Early Summer )
This is my Grand Mosaic Project.

I just picked a picture from the internet of some mountains, converted it into colors that would work with DF (and the stone available), and just kind of guessed and checked on the placement of each block.

The mural is made entirely from constructed floor, roads, floor grates, and one-tile bridges. Oh, and there's a few upright spikes thrown in.

The stone is cobaltite (dark blue), microcline (light blue/cyan), schist (brownish), green glass (green), mica (dark gray), felsite (light gray), and alunite (white).

The most time consuming aspect of this mural was making all the green glass floor grates and blocks for all the green. The most challenging was mapping a picture to the DF world and trying to choose what constructions/buildings to use. - galaban
Δ 17. Obsidian factory

( 17 Early Spring to onwards )
This is a basic obsidian factory. Unfortunately, I forgot to dig a place for the water tank, so I had to stick it two z-levels above. The water is kept in place by a floor hatch, controlled by a level outside the main entrance to the obsidian factory.

The doorways, one z-level above, are both sealed off when the room is being flooded with magma/water. One z-level up is a statue to help me not overshoot and channel out too much (releasing the lava). Also, it helps indicate that I need to channel out one square to the right of the magma to release the lava. Fun, fun! - galaban
