Garlicgrass - 204 Early Autumn by Aquilegia

Map Description:

My first and only (at the moment) fortress. The design is quite bad I think to run a fortress efficiently; long walks between stockpiles, not really much utilization of the z-levels, but at least it works and I'm learning : )

Point of Interest: The Hill Fortress

When I had my first ambush a few dwarves died because I couldn't figure out how to manually set their paths as military. The goblins were between them and the entrance so they died (curse you default: 'soldier engages enemies' option).

Also the invaders kept outside and didn't enter the entrance and kept hunting cats and things which was quite annoying.

So then I had the idea to make an outdoor area on top of this 'hill' free from invaders by removing the ramps and channeling where it met the edge. The murky pools in the moat don't fill up very much since it's a quite dry climate, so I incorporated them in the channel so reduce workload for the miners.

You can also see the wall around the first entrance I build to keep goblins from shooting down the hill into the natural 'canyon' which took me half a year to build, by bad management. In the west you can see the second and the newest entrance at the roads. The second entrance leads down from the top of the hill down into the fortress and the newest entrance leads from the top of the hill down, west and then up to a place west of the hill.

The newest entrance isn't ready yet.. I still have to channel the walls in the maze (it's the sw-maze from the second-entrance maze) and carve fortifications so the marksmen can shoot the invaders and I've got to add some traps for increased safety.

The Hillfortress is quite efficient now. I still haven't had a siege, but plenty of ambushers who all entered the entrances since nothing was outside and were killed or captured. I have added a small hill in the northeast with a bridge and also incorporated a part of the valley by making a 'moat' (in the northwest) - Aquilegia

This is actually pretty cool fortress already. :)
You are doing very well if this is your first fortress!

Thanks :) I actually read almost the entire wiki before getting started so that might have helped a bit, but I intend to keep playing with this one until I understand also the late-game so my next fortresses won't fail just after I spend days on some magnificent designs for them : )
