Stormwires - 223 Early Winter by Kanddak

Map Description:

I haven't played this fort in a couple months but I've always felt like I ought to export it and put it up on DFMA. I did some lovely experiments in this fort. I stopped playing when there was a tantrum spiral after I threw too many children into the magma. I actually might have been pretty close to riding it out successfully, I just lost interest, and started playing other forts.
This is the fort where I...
...learned about burning coal blocks in iron bins.
...gave every dwarf a luxurious suite of rooms.
...first intensively micromanaged mood materials to make artifacts out of only the most valuable stuff, by giving all moodable workshops either a drop chute or an airlock.
...first micromanaged dwarf skills to make all the farmers and such dabblers in one of the metalworking skills. It worked pretty well, I got a full set of legendary smiths.
...perfected systems for flinging immigrants, nobles, and children into the magma vent.
...made my first tower-cap farm.

Point of Interest: Child & noble trap

To catch nobles, the lever's workshop profile is set to allow only the noble I want to kill and it's ordered pulled. When the noble enters the hallway, I lock the doors and pull the bridge, dumping him onto the execution platform (or into the magma if that bridge is already retracted).
To catch children, I set up some big hauling project to make sure all adults have jobs, then order the constructed floors in the 5x5 room to be removed. Children enter the hallway, and again are locked in and dumped onto the execution platform. There are also ways to micromanage this involving designating one tile at a time, looking at the job list to see who got assigned to it, then undesignating the floors assigned to dwarves you don't want killed.
I killed children for about three years without problems, partly due to the amazing rooms for all dwarves. Then I did it and everyone flipped out and there was a devastating tantrum spiral. I don't know what made the difference.

It all started because I was drafting and burning all the regular migrants, but then noticed their children, being undraftable, would stroll into the fort, so I'd have all these orphans lying around having woodcrafting moods. After I burned all the orphans, I figured I might as well fry the rest of the children, too. - Kanddak
