EXPEDITION LOG
Much has happened in the last year. I... Well, any who know my family name know that we have worked the stone as devoutly as any dwarf. Following the seams; uncovering the riches of the deep.
But....
This forest is beautiful. It is shocking to say aloud, but I feel it. We all feel it. Lest you judge us too harshly, let me explain.
We were intruders in her leafy vaults, this forest, strangers and desperate at that. Yet when we needed her the most, she did not turn her back on us. When Cog Kogangatin went looking for plants, any plants... He knew nothing! He might as easily have poisoned us all. But he returned with his arms full. A bounty to sustain us.
As I sleep under the boughs, the rain gently falling, I was lulled to a sleep as deep and restful as ever I have had.
When we took up the pick to dig a sandy hole into the ground, I looked around and the rest of the squad had their heads raised to the treetops. We had no heart left for sulking in the bowels of the ground. I threw the pick down and have not turned back.
We will build towers of wood to mirror the trees around us. They will protect us as a mighty oak does a squirrel.
When after nearly a year the agents of Mountainhome finally found us, they were ecstatic. Then they were not as sure. They had nothing we wanted, though perhaps capitalizing on our new outlook, they asked us to grow as many plants and seeds as we could and they would pay double. It did not stop them from looking at us oddly.
No surprise then that though the caravan has been gone for several months no migrants have come to what we have started calling Fotthoriton... "Forresthall".

This single Glumprong tree is an anomaly. The outpost is not on an Evil map, but I must have caught a small corner of one. I am going to try and build the forest by clearing out competition. There are already a few Glumprong saplings in the area, too. Perhaps one day it will cover the board. - Aristoi

The trees are regrowing mighty fast!
Also, a question: do you have invaders turned on?

@sneakeypete: I've been only trimming trees, not clear cutting whole swaths. I was hoping that would help them grow saplings. I actually have no idea if that's how it works!
Regarding invaders, there appear to be no goblins, though that was unintentional. I guess they were wiped out during map generation and I didn't notice. I am getting 2-3 kobold thieves with each caravan, but with about 40 war dogs now they are not too dangerous. Maybe a war with the elves once the towers are done....

Ah. I've always worked on the principle that they grow up randomly, and thus more will be spawned if there's less trees there already taking up room. So i usually just clear cut the entire map every year or two.

@sneakeypete: You might be right on that. I have read that they grow back even if there are no trees left. It would be nice to know for sure what was more efficient for tree creation.

wow, this is progressing quite steadily. seems like this will be an awesome project :)

@P-Luke: Thanks! I really had no idea quite how much micromanagement it would take to build the towers. Not being able to build walls on floors means a lot of pre-planning. I basically have to decide what the next level up will be in order to put the roof on the current level!
