Where does the water go once it enters the hole at the front? You'd have filled that channel faster if you'd pumped it out of the sea.

IT doesn't go anywhere. It's just there to provide easy water to the fortress. Kinda like a lazy man's well.
But I suppose pumping it back out IS a good idea.
