Standardwild - 1066 Early Autumn by Zaltanek

Map Description:

I found this save file while going through old versions of DF. I started digging and found and aquifer. This fortress is a few years after that discovery. I have pretty much stopped work on this fortress after i upgraded to 40.d. In the conversion process it prevents you from altering dwarven professions.
A couple of notes:
Roughly 200 pumps were active at certain times to pierce the aquifer.
The power generation is over 2000 and most of it is used.
2 levels of aquifer were pierced. I believe it was a 44 by 44 hole.
One aquifer was tapped as a fountain, using the aquifer below as a drain.
One aquifer was walled off and floodgated to be used as a lake.

Point of Interest: Bridge of the Sea.

This is the start of the bridge of the sea. Being by the ocean the dwarves have come to love the color blue. Entranced by microlines beauty they began contruction of this bridge to honor the sea. Only the base and the bare minimum of walkway have been completed. The Tower of the whirlpool is being contructed as one end terminus of the bridge. - Zaltanek

Hey, nice fountain. I try to do the same basic theme, but my dwarves keep drowning. Maybe I should go for your method....

Δ 119. Bridge of the Sea.

Δ 17. Exploratory Digging
Horizontal shafts were dug in search of stone. The pumping and walling of an aquifer required me to go scavaging for usable materials. - Zaltanek

Pretty standard farms. Seeds on one side of the plots, food on the other. - Zaltanek
Δ 16. Conglomerate cluster.
Without this cluster of conglomerate I would not have been able to finish construction. - Zaltanek
Δ 16. Power station - 33 waterwheels - Barely enough power
This is the power used for the pumps. It used up most of the trees on the map. It also ran into a problem when I converted to a newer version of DF. The output side of the pump stopped eating water. The caused the pumps to sieze. I tried a few different ways to resolve this issue and found the best way was to create a second aquifer dump behind the first. This succeeded and power resumed. - Zaltanek
¶ 15. Aquifer level 1 - 44 by 44 hole
This is the first level of the aquifer that I discovered. I had considered a normal breach using just a few pumps, but decided that would be too easy.
I began construction of the pumps and power system on the level above. I nearly ran out of stone to build this level. As construction was underway I was able to find a stone cluster on the level above.
The pumps to clear this level required over 2000 power.
Even with the pumps draining the outer wall it took 2 years to mine out and contain the center aquifer tile.

Δ 15. Endless Fountain. How to harness an aquifer
After digging out the rest of the aquifer within the containment walls, I was able to contain 1 aquifer tile with walls. After I added floodgates I can now have an endless fountain when the gates are open. The level below is also a contained aquifer. This lets me drain the water of the fountain into the level below. Grates were added to prevent the water pressure from pushing dwarves into the 7/7 water and dying.

Δ 14. Aquifer level 2 - Turn a aquifer into a lake.
This level was drained using the pumps above. The staircases and walls were then constructed. Floodgates were added to the internal aquifers in the center. By turning off the pumps and opening the floodgates this level turns into a lake. If I ever need to empty the level I turn on the pumps, close the gates and it drys in a few minutes.
The inner ring of aquifer is where the fountain drains into.
The lake actually takes far longer to fill than it takes to drain. It can be drained in a few minutes, takes around 30 or more to fill. - Zaltanek
Δ 13. Aquifer level 3 - How to grow tired of an aquifer.
After piercing 2 levels I was displeased to find another level. I was also running out of internal space for what I wanted to do. The initial ramp did not hit an aquifer. When digging commenced I got the digging into damp soil message. Figuring it was the lake above I continued designating. I ended up hitting another aquifer. Using pumps from the level above I was able to wall off my ramps. I wanted to see how far down the aquifer went so started digging. I discovered aquifer tiles on all zlevels.

Between this and being unable to change dwarven professions I will probibly abandon this fortress.
