Foresthold - 105 Early Spring by timmeh

Map Description:

The start of the 5th year has come with both the good, and the bad. With the towers along the road completed, I am ready to start my next big project, a set of walls connecting each tower to the next (and the first set to the fortress), allowing me to control wagon entry.

The good, the road and towers have been finished, I've passed the 50 dwarf mark, giving me a Mayor and Fortress Guard, and a good bit of construction and expansion within the fortress.

The bad, while there were very few goblins this year, and no deaths (at least, no dwarven deaths...), my bone carver was wounded, while defending one of the children. She suffered a nasty knife wound, resulting in a yellow upper right leg. Unfortunately, she has not yet made a full recovery, but is at least resting, I hope to see her back to work next year.

I removed the population cap this year, and got a surprisingly small 15 new dwarves. On the other hand, I now have a total of 6 children, counting babies. I do however find it odd that only two couples have had any children, with three apiece...

Point of Interest: 6. The Lower Floor

Normally I refer to the floor above this one as the lower floor, but nothing has been changed there, so I'm not going to bother with another "nothing has changed here" PoI.

On this floor however, plenty has changed. I've prepared three new bedroom blocks, a new dining room, a storage area, and a workshop block. All the bedrooms on this level have glass boxes, instead of stone chests.

The set of rooms to the north of the ramp access are the mayor's lodgings. The left and right rooms are his office and dining room, and the center room is his bedroom. They are all just barely enough to satisfy him, to prevent later nobles from getting upset because he has a better room than them.

I also plan to make a massive set of royal rooms using the space just south of the stairs, if and when I get the king. Any other nobles are likely to get rooms in the un-mined spaces between the rooms and the hallway, to save space. Although I may set of the hammer's room closer to the cistern, in case he gets a little to violent....... - timmeh

Lookin good so far. What's with the logs in the river?

I really like the spiral staircase design!

I suspect that the logs in the river fell in during moat construction: trees prevent channelling, so the trees were ordered to be chopped... then channels were designated before the logs got hauled off. I wish dwarves would move logs/stones away from the dig site like they do when placing workshops!

Anyway timmeh, it's a good solid aboveground fort. If I were on this map I'd be very worried about trees growing to block my wagon access. Are you planning to build a road? Will it be lined with watch-towers, or will the edges be sprinkled with traps?

@juice - Thanks!

The logs are, like Jurph suggested, from loose logs being on the tiles when they were mined.

@ Jurph - Thank you! I'm considering using a smaller version for the towers.

I've started a road (thanks for the reminder!). I plan to get some watchtowers along the road, probably connected to the fortress by underground tunnels, and with no other way in/out, to prevent unwanted access through the tunnels.

Thanks again, to both of you!

I like your eight towers along the road, perfect to impress those barbarian humans and elves.
I don't particularly like the smoothed floor tiles for this tileset though, they look too raised, if you know what I mean.

Its so... flat, at least on the surface! Very cool space you've sealed off though, and everything is building down towards an epic fort.
