  I have long enjoyed having a central stairwell umbilical connecting all levels of my fortresses. This one was no different, though nobody fell down these stairs in a fit of madness.
  
  ...Not that I saw, anyway.

• Δ 19. 30. Black Flats

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  I had hoped one day to build a massive, black, spiralling tower here, taking up about 23 of the central diameter of this roughly-almost-square area. When the bridges are removed it's not accessible at all, except that the tower would have had a stairway down into the fort.
  
  This fortress was played for several years after these shots were taken, but nothing more remains of it as I claimed these screenshots from an email in my sent items folder, but lost the fort itself to a crash. - Noble Digger

  While never finished, this hollow below the chess board would serve as the barracks. Sparring would occur above, in the sun, on the chess board. - Noble Digger

• Δ 18. 06. The Lazy Barracks

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  A big ugly room with some archery targets, and a shitload of the military's sweaty stinky socks laying everywhere.
  
  At least none of them left rotting cheese on the floor for 3 months.
  
  The 4 cages all contain fire imps!
  
  The two grates lead down into a complex underground sewage system that runs throughout the fort and surrounding wilds, dumping all liquids (eventually) to the chasm, in most places.
  
  Complex channels run all through the smoothed plateaus outside the actual fortress. Goblins arriving on the map cannot easily reach the front door and often get frustrated on the way to it, or killed by arriving soldiers. - Noble Digger

• Δ 18. 07. Execution Chamber

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  This tiny nook was often loaded with weapon traps and the cage filled with as many as 10 goblin prisoners, who were summarily given their freedom and offered the choice: stand in one place, or step on the trigger for a big swinging metal bar with 10 giant fucking axes strapped to it.

• Δ 18. 08. Workshop Level

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Most types of work are done on this level. Furniture, blocks, barrels, bone bolts and skull totems, including many masterful tentacle demon skull totems and bone helmets :)
  
  The non-magma-fired metalworks is also on this level. All of the magma workshops are above, clustered around the volcano. Note the magma works east of the volcano on this level, blocked off with cinnabar walls to remind dwarves not to open it. :) - Noble Digger

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Most goblins choose their death along this path. While there are many bridges built right now allowing easy access to the fortress, when they are removed, the labyrinth is unforgiving and my marksdwarves are legendary.
  
  Take a look around, up, down, and sideways in this area, to see the crazy paths goblins sometimes follow or get knocked into during combat. These tunnels are intricately connected in some areas, and open onto several sites intended to be small temples. - Noble Digger

• Δ 18. 16. Chasm Drainage

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  One of many drainage points for any theoretical water. I designed the fortress to properly channel rainwater to the chasm or other safe locations, in most places.
  
  Results may vary.
  
  Look downward a few levels to see where the water drains west into the chasm, and above to see the sort of rock temple I made for this drainage "area". - Noble Digger

• Δ 18. 17. West Access

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  A lot of interesting paths into the fortress start here, as many merchants and invaders spawned here. Most of these paths lead through several traps or long, winding channels with no escape for a scale mile or more.
  
  Some paths dead-end or loop back outside, while the main southern path channels invaders a loooooong way over to POI 10, The Gauntlet, where my soldiers wait. - Noble Digger

  A nice rocky terrace with its edge smoothed, I liked how it looked in this tileset. Most people see walls, but I'm used to it and it looks like floors to me. - Noble Digger

• Δ 17. 09. Living Area

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Dwarves sleep here in their modest accomodations. The walls and furniture are obsidian, so they are quite happy.
  
  The many engravings (white dots in floors and walls) depict the tragedy deep within the mines and many of its victims, as well as many mundane things important to the dwarves and the various artifacts. - Noble Digger

• Δ 17. 11. Grand Hall

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  This enormous engraved hall is filled with high-quality obsidian furniture and engraved by the entire fortress population. Food and roasts are normally kept here, though I haven't turned 'take from a pile' on at this time.
  
  The vein was cinnabar, poorly placed imho. :( - Noble Digger

• Δ 17. 12. The Not-As-Grand Hall

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Just a small extra dining hall, since this fort had such a high population. It usually wasn't turned on, but dwarves still ate here when they wanted to.
  
  All obsidian, all smoothed. - Noble Digger

• Δ 17. 13. The Really Grand Hall

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  This was the most frequently-activated meeting room of throatpunch. Statues of various precious metals and stones line the center, overlooking the fort's animal pit.
  
  Weapon and armor racks abound, as well as cozy little booths for group dining, drinking, smoking, etc.
  
  Of course, the military left their shit everywhere in here too.
  
  The stairway leads up to the sunroof, which can be opened to keep most dwarves from turning into pukebags.
  
  Note the drains out in the hallway, another piece of the sewage system (which isn't all that necessary or functional, but i loved it!) - Noble Digger

• Δ 17. 14. A Secret Entrance

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  There are probably many entrances. This one was going to have a statue, raisable bars, or something making it so dwarves could pass through it if given the right ordersjobs, but that goblins never could.
  
  The tunnel outside is a gauntlet of channels and statues. - Noble Digger

• Δ 16. 15. Animal Pit

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Shaped kind of like a # sign. Animals are dropped in from above and can be let out via the door below. I know now that this trick of locking a door does not prevent pets from hitting your FPS: It must be a wall or a clearly unpathable object such that the animals do not keep checking if it's unlocked.
  
  The big pit in the north end is part of the access system for the ramparts way up above, connected to the Really Great Hall's skylight, etc.
  
  To the south is the main sewer for the living area. - Noble Digger

• Δ 16. 23. The Back Patio

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Lots of strange ways into the fortress back here, most of which are only accessible from inside. This area also connects to the neat roadcanal system in various places. The 'back door' entrance is in the microcline shell over to the left.
  
  I used to chain dogs here to detect ambushes, and they did their job, though they are now dead.

• Δ 16. 24. Chasm Magma Drain

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  This particular hole in the ground is one of the last stages of a long series of magma drains that come from above, and drain below and left to the chasm. Check it out if you like weird tunnely shit. - Noble Digger

• Δ 15. 18. The Hall of Mourning

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  A great, great, great many dwarves died to build and maintain this fortress, and to protect it from the horrors within the earth. They are buried on this level.
  
  All but 3 of the normal obsidian tombs are filled.
  
  The stockpile here is a graveyard, currently (finally) empty--burial and cleanup took years--and several secret passages lead off into the depths behind a couple specific tombs. - Noble Digger

• Δ 15. 19. Cloisters

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Two of these four cloisters contain finely-appointed nobles' tombs, containing masterwork obsidian furnishings and platinum sarcophagi.
  
  The other two house the Sheriff's office and the prison, and a convalescence room containing several fine artifacts and a bed.
  
  Hallways to the north lead to various access areas and to the animal pit. To the far north is the kitchen, though thankfully all burial areas are closed behind doors and dwarves never have to think about them unless they want to! - Noble Digger

  Coins are stored here, and a stairway in the left wing leads to a very important control room (which was not installed at the time of this screenshot) -- several more years passed before this fort was set aside. - Noble Digger

• Δ 15. 21. The Future Throne Room

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  After passing through the Halls of Mourning, visitors may counsel with the king, who took on the guise of a peasant to travel to throatpunch without official reason or sanction.
  
  The hole in the floor would become a series of 4 trapdoors that the king could use to banish disfavorable sorts to the mines, or deeper. - Noble Digger

• Δ 15. 22. Ye Eatery

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  Dwarves must pass through sunlight to access food and drink, which keeps my cave adaptation problems down.
  
  It's a giant sand level, carved out and filled with food and chef's workshops of all kinds. The intact pond is fun for a giggle, I guess, and as you can see tons of attacks have come here as the 'back door' is open to the far left (stairways up).
  
  Most refuse rots under sunlight from a hole in the cieling with high walls around its opening, keeping us safe. - Noble Digger

• Δ 14. 25. Secrets Lurk Below

  Many of the fort's dark, secret passages are connected to this room and the rooms below it. See if you can follow the paths, they eventually lead through several deep underground temples filled with confusing passages. They are connected to a few small paths leading to the surface, as well. - Noble Digger

• Δ 12. 26. The Mines

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  From here on are the scoured bones of the earth. This massive quarry is decorated in interesting fashions to preserve the unique faces of the natural rock walls inside the smoothed, door-sealed "blocks" of quarried stone, if it is ever needed.
  
  Several large but useless rock formations were framed and honored in this fashion, as was the magma pipe and the chasm. Several bridges access and cross the chasm on this level, and a few spiders have survived the cats yet.
  
  Check out the mica "theatre" to the southeast. I wish all the stone was dumped but try to imagine it 'clean' :)
  
  A facility for processing stone via catapult is to the left, extra doors are kept in the mine shafts to the right, and a long drainage ditch is to the lower right, its access-ways separated from this level of the fortress by channels. - Noble Digger

• Δ 2. 28. Temple of Light and Shadow

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  These gorgeous rooms make me wish I still had this save so I could view it with a Dorten-esque tileset.
  
  These rooms and ones to the left are largely just here to give the stuff on the right hand side an ominous buildup as adventurers approach it. Try and picture these rooms in first person perspective!
  
  The path is very, very complex, and connects to POI 25, Secrets Lurk Below. - Noble Digger

• Δ 27. The Deep Earth

  ( 1063 Early Summer to onwards )
  A horrible thing happened here, and the fortress' history was forever stained with blood and gore and tears and thenceforth, the skittering of rodents in the stone halls fell on the unrestful ears of the survivors.
  
  The mess and the pain accompanying the tragedy were eventually washed clean, and in honor of the dead and in the spirit of living on, the entire level was smothed and converted into a stone bank, designed to preserve native species of lovely stone from catapulting.
  
  As the catapults here were built earlier than those in The Mine, a great, great deal of stone was eradicated in this deep underground hall.
  
  The lone, smoothed rectangle of stone to the upper right covers the eerie, glowing hole that was discovered when this level was being quarried. Most dwarves would rather forget this place, though much work was once done here.
  
  To speed up work, food and drink were once kept here, as well. This did not prove much faster, as the time wasted on dwarves leaving here to eat or drink was wasted on dwarves hauling food down here, often dropping it on the ground mid-way to go upstairs and...get something to eat. Forcing another dwarf to pick it up, return it upstairs, etc, etc, etc :( - Noble Digger
