Tomeheaven - 76 Mid Spring by Razin

Map Description:

Welcome to Tomeheaven, messenger, home of the noble order of The Key-Sword of Forever, loyal servants of Queen Igathzuntir of the Balanced Crypts!

Tomeheaven was just established roughly one year ago, and our order only numbers 16 dwarves thus far. It isn't exactly luxurious yet, but feel free to look around. Take a copy of our plans if you wish, it may help make senses of it all, and you can give them to the queen with your report.

Point of Interest: The Cistern

Yet another empty chamber has been dug beneath the Kitchens, which will store water, both for drinking, and for use in our obsidian maker. Wells just outside the Grand Hall will aglow thirsty dwarfs to tap into it, and a system of arcane machines only our mechanics fully understand will ensure that the water does not flood up into the rest of the fort, in spite of the pressure our geologists think will be put on the cistern's water by the cave river. - Razin

Construction is well underway, I'm sure the queen will be pleased with news of its progress. A warning has been issued that staircases built on successive levels can be hazards for dwarves who may slip, or be pushed, from the top; as such my forts employ either a central spiral stair, or a succession of alternating up/down stairs.

Good work defending the hillside, its always challenging trying to close the holes around a mountainhome when your back is against a rolling hillside.

I like the emphasis on diamonds in construction as opposed to the more traditional squares and rectangles. Very cool!

Thanks! I'm not sure what I would do without this particular tile set, the smooth diagonal walls really help open up more design variety.

Points of Interest

¶ 16. Overview of the Valley
As you can see, the fortress is being built into this small valley. Our miner's have carved some sections of the mountain face, and temporary wooden walls have been built to restrict access to the valley, so that thieves and raiders are unable to sneak up on us from behind, though our defenses right now are still fairly weak. - Razin
Δ 15. Courtyard and Constructions
Plans for Tomeheaven include a great deal of construction on the face of the mountain, and here you can see the beginning of some of it. The structure being built to the east shall house our carpentry shop, which we expect to be very busy, given that we've built our city in a jungle. The round structure is the base of a tower that will support the various walkways connecting the upper levels of the valley together.

If you need a drink, be sure not to drop anything unpleasant tasting into the ponds, as they and the rains are our only source of water until we locate the river our surveying geologists insist is somewhere in the mountain, to the south. - Razin
Δ 15. Future Forges
While this room is empty for now, it will one day house our magma forges and glass works, though that day may be a long way off. Before they can start, the tunnels for magma must be dug, iron pump components forged using wood-burning forges, and a power plant to run it all must be built. Things are complicated further by the need to set up additional pluming and the mold for for an obsidian maker before filling the magma reservoir.

Storage rooms for ore are accessible through the stairway column to the North, and bars ready for forging will be store in the alcoves on the side of the work floor itself. - Razin
Δ 14. The Warren
This is the basic floor plan for the fortress's sleeping quarters. Each pair of hallways merge at the end, and this is where the cambers for nobles and administrators have been planned. The basic design should be flexible enough that we can expand each room should a noble... require a better chamber. It isn't much to look at now, but it should be quite comfortable once we have cleaned it up a bit.

To the north of this chamber are our storerooms and farms, though those are also rather empty right now. We've been two busy getting the basics established over this past year (and our dwarfpower insufficient) to bother making more the a handful of stone crafts to trade for seeds and other necessities. - Razin
Δ 13. Kitchens and the Grand Hall
This level is where we will ensure all our citizen's needs are met, and that they are kept content in the face of adversity. The vast chamber to the south of the stairwell is a dining hall worthy of legends... or it will be once we get some furniture in there.

The cluster of rooms around the stairwell will hold our kitchens, millstones, and sorted breeding chambers. In addition, the niches for butchers shops and cloth loom (there is, regrettably, little chance of us producing silk here, so our cloth shall be fashioned from plant parts), plus all assorted crafts have been placed here for the sake of convenience. The shops will be built once the appropriate niches are smoothed, as they will be too cluttered to do so afterwords. - Razin
