Shoveknives is probably my proudest moment in terms of fortress defense.

An error involving mining tunnels and an up/down stairway led to the river draining into these tunnels, making them inaccessable. I was lucky not to completely flood the fortress: had I not acted quickly enough, everything would have been underwater within a season or two. - LegacyCWAL

That some grand fortifications you've got there, I like what you've done with the valley entrance and defences. Good work :)

Is it just me or do those channels in the east look like they could someday be used to flood the valley :P

Yeah those are some kickass fortifications. I also like how you've claimed the center of your map with walls

I really like the way you've claimed the whole valley. Also the bridge over the whole thing is awesome.

Is it just me or is it possible to enter the secure lumber area and the meeting area from the south?

Silfurdreki: It's secure, but I admit it does look open at first glance. Look at the cul-de-sac from 1 z-level up though, and you'll see the moats that cut it off to the sides, with the remaining ramps down there either shaved off or else cut off by moats of their own. I'll probably wind up walling it off sooner or later, but my dwarves almost never go down that far =)

Δ 17. Grand Meeting Area.
This is my main meeting area. The meeting area zones and the zoos are large and spread out to reduce lage, and walls, cliffs, and moats make sure that it is literally untouchable unless an enemy makes it through the primary defenses first. There is technically a waterfall machine here, but it doesn't work particularly well, as evidenced by the VERY large drainage pool next to it. - LegacyCWAL
Δ 17. Secure Lumber
Here you see the way that I like to secure lumber supplies: use moats and walls to make a forested area inaccessable to anybody who does not go through the fort proper first. The grey is only recent and temporary, the result of removing a shrub infestation that had been preventing regrowth of the area. - LegacyCWAL
¶ 16. The Bridges of Doom
The valley below is the only way to get to my gates, and it is (literally) covered by four bridges, of which these are the northernmost two and a half. During a siege, a legion of Marksdwarves rain iron death down upon the attackers, and the attackers can't get to them without going through the fortress itself. No enemy has ever made it to the second bridge. - LegacyCWAL
Δ 15. The Main Gate
Here is the actual "front door" to the fortress: moats and walls ensure that this is the one and only way to get into the fortress proper, and thus to the areas "behind" the fort such as the meeting area and my secure lumber yards. This is also where my 24 Macedwarves are stationed during a siege, but the Marksdwarves on the Bridges of Death ensure that they see little action. The bridge is part of an Elf trap: if they bring me nothing but cloth one more time, I'll open it, forcing them to go through a spike-filled maze. - LegacyCWAL
Δ 15. The Valley of the Shadow of Death.
This valley is the only way to get to my gates. Anybody trying to approach it must enter far to the north and travel its length to get to the gates far to the south. Above are the Bridges of Death. Here you see the barracks as well: any Marksdwarves still in the barracks when an attack comes will be able to fire at the enemy without having to travel to their posts. - LegacyCWAL

Δ 13. Nobles' District
This is where I've stuck all the nobles. Touching the big hallway in the north is (starting at the top, going clockwise) the future Advisor's room, the Tax Collector's room, the Duke's room, the Hammerer's room, and the Dungeon Master's room. The Duchess Consort has the two rooms jutting off the Duke's, and the little L-shaped one south of the Dungeon Master's room is for my broker/manager. On the south of the picture is the future quarters of the King and the Queen Consort. - LegacyCWAL
Δ 13. The Habitation Level
In the middle is my farms, built before I realized just how much overkill that much farm area was. That's a platinum statue and artifact floodgate in the dining room, with the mayor's quarters to the south of it and the Captain of the Guard's quarters north of it. On the east is the shops, a stockpile of shop-ish stuff like clothes and crappy crafts. You can see the quarters, though the grey area, being a former magnetite deposit, turned out to be rather poor for that purpose. To the southeast and northeast are the low-rent slums. The southwest is part of the nobles' district. - LegacyCWAL
Δ 12. Industry
As is my habit, all my industry is in one place. It's not a particularly sophisticated work, but it's one of my earliest, so I find it acceptable. No magma means the forges and smelters get lumped in with everything else. - LegacyCWAL
