Would it be possible for that reclaim party to survive if the dwarves started building downward stairs? looks like you could since there's some solid rock beneath them. Strike the earth, FAST!
If you look at the video closely, the volcano was the whole mountain itself, and part of the mountain was dug into somehow, and the lava just poured out.

Here's a challenge: reclaim bringing along a bauxite hatch and DIG FAST!!!!! Make a thriving obsidian farm and magma industry, then drain the volcano to reconnect with the outside world! Make a fortune of a craftsdwarf with nothing to do for 20 years but make ☼Obsidian Amulet☼!!!

Bottomless pits before use to have a problem of being full of floating magma until the dwarves came up next to it.
