YOU WILL WANT TO WATCH THIS AT A RATE OF 200 OR EVEN 300!!!
I channelled the edge of the map all the way from the top down to the bottom and dug out the entire bottom floor - removing support from the entire level. After about 10 seconds of thinking my computer finally dropped the entire map (except the edges as you can see) down a level and cracked it into 2 islands.

What's even more amazing is that your dwarves on the top of the giant block didn't die horrible horrible deaths.
