My river was infested with various monsters, and in particular the cave crocs were breeding at an exponential rate. I decided to dam the underground river by freezing it instead of going through the risky process of draining the thing. The map is a freezing tundra, making this possible.

Well, I didn't know you could do that. Did it stop the problem with the crocs? Did the whole river freeze up?

I could have made the whole river freeze had I opened up the roof down the entire flow, but I just wanted to stop it up at one point. It only froze at the part that was considered "outdoors".
The river drained out into a bottomless pit, which allowed me to send in the military to slaughter them.

I kind of want to point out what a risk of a cave-in you took with a channel designation like that. You really only needed a single line to block the source.
Still, pretty cool - a damming method I'd never considered for a UG river.

You are quite right Retro, I did not notice that before. For the rest of the shafts I channeled out the inner six -before- I designated the outer ring, but it looks like I got caught up in the moment here.
It could have certainly been made more efficient, but I like the look of the square, personally.
