Aha! I finally get how you did it. The very first tile from the magma is channeled and then a floor is placed over it, preventing it from overflowing. The second tile is a fortification, to prevent the fire imps from wreaking havoc. The third is an stair. The miner can channel out the magma without exposing himself by standing on top of the fortification. Very clever.
Sort of. There's normally no risk of overflowing; the floor is placed mainly to prevent imps from coming up out of the hole and bypassing the fortification.
