Using a controlled cave in to help build a magma chamber for forges. I'd already dug one area, but decided I'd rather have it closer to the main heart of my fortress. When I dug my access tunnel, however, I realized I was digging towards the skinny part of the magma pipe. I didn't want to dig another ugly tunnel to the pipe above me, so I decided to just make a hole instead!
I am also afraid of fire imps, so I set up some fortifications inside the magma channel so that they wouldn't be able to get to my smiths, but the magma would still be able to flow. The wall I designate, then suspend, is so that the mason doesn't build on the wrong side and get trapped.
NOTE: I've sped up my game because I am impatient, so the dwarves and lava appear to move quite quickly. The tunnel is 4 wide and with only one turn because fluids have issues with corners.
