Because some dude on the forum claimed magma couldn't be pressurized by pumps. Note how the magma in the vent doesn't overflow out of the channel the pump takes magma from, but once the magma's pumped, it flows through the W-shaped tunnels and comes back up to the pump's level.
Note also that when magma piles up in the right side of the W, it doesn't start flowing up into the middle right away, because magma doesn't have its own pressure. When the magma backs up in 7s all the way to the pump, the pump starts putting its output magma up the inside of the W. The left bottom and center then have to fill completely before magma will start being pushed up the left side.

An excellent demonstration.
[Many goblins could be killed using this information, for those inclined to create such systems.]
