Dormant volcanoes just didn't seem right so the dwarves used their mechanical skill to create this mechanical erupting volcano.
Here is a detailed explanation of it's workings.
This is just a working concept; I plan to have one of these linked to a water clock so that it erupts every so many years.
From here you can see the extent of the magma flow. This is only 20 out of the 94 z-levels worth of magma.
For a better view here is a composite image of each level. - Vattic
The HTML5 map viewer is currently in Alpha mode - I'm actively trying to develop new functionality.
There should be many very obvious problems with the viewer; please check
the
Issues page to notify or comment on the most egregious problems to help
me prioritise. The most common will be Loading... with an error
in the browser developer tools console. e.g. RangeError: Offset is
outside the bounds of the DataView
. Feel free to
report a problem
with a link to the problematic map or point of interest.

You can download the compressed map file:
2010-10/vattic-Steelbeach-region1 - Almost Ready-508-2667.fdf-map
but you will need the .NET version of
SL's DF Map Compressor
to convert to the .PNG image format.
