I successfully fought off 6 more ambushes (maybe 8, I can't remember) but they're coming 2 at a time along with each trading caravan that arrives. I've decided to make peace with the elves for now because I really can't afford a two front war at this point, so I'm going along with their senseless mandates until my fortress can be on full lockdown.
It seems my attempts to cap my dwarven population has came back to bite me in the arse. I am now fending off waves of ambushes with only 10 defenders and about 20(ish) worker dwarfs.
Production was slow (again) due to ambushes and having to lock all the dwarfs down below. Burrows are still a bit buggy in that assigning a dwarf will sometimes freeze them in place, wherever they may be, until they realize they're supposed to be someplace else. The way around the bug is to remove them from the burrow assignment and re-assign them once they've completed whatever task they were assigned. This is a bit annoying.
Also a bit annoying is the bed assignment bug, in which bed assignments, barracks, dormitories really mean nothing. And restricting my bowdwarfs from grabbing single stacks of bolts from the far reaches of the map during an ambush. Oh, and bolt selection in general seems buggy as hell.
Also uniform assignments seem to take place only if the dwarf "feels" like it, apparently. And if they've grown attached to their training shield, forget about it. I've forbidden it but they still carry it around like it's their best friend.
Still working on final touches for the walls, including fortifications for my bowdwarfs and a ceiling over the outer entrance of the fort. This will eventually be floor of the first of several upper levels.
Forcing the ambushes across the bridge and through the entrance seems to work well for defending the fortress. - schm0

Well, this was my most epic fortress to date, but I'm forced to abandon due to design flaws. I'll keep my saves just in case.
Lessons learned:
* Large, external constructions are difficult to manage with my limited experience. Need to focus smaller, then expand outwards. Maybe a long external wall with to a tower for external defense.
* Balancing external construction efforts with fortress defense needs.
* Farming is mildly important, but little more than a single plot is needed for an early fortress. Food and meat can be plentiful through trade. Plan for below ground irrigation and place priority on getting underground farming up and running over the outdoors.
* Forges for metal crafting need to begin ASAP.
* Mining and masonry need to begin ASAP.
* Military training should begin as soon as the first migrant waves arrive.
* Get a road up ASAP.
