Mortalwheels - 106 Late Autumn by Servu

Map Description:

The Mortalwheels excavation site has just begun operation. I am currently concentrating of finishing the outer wall as well as constructing some defenses to let our miners work in peace, so the mine is still just a little hole in the ground.
Real progress is expected to begin when I get my new computer next week.

Point of Interest: Wooden outpost

This is where earth was first struck upon embarking. Construction of the outpost was my very first priority since the overground farms it guards are my only adequate food source. I recently bought a wolf from the elves that is chained outside the front gate to growl at the visiting caravans. Poor fellow got it's rear leg ripped off by a gobbo some time ago.
There used to be patrols on the wall but the recruits have begun grumbling and I've been forced to give them more free time. I plan on expanding the military soon though. - Servu

When the wall is complete, I'll start building an access bridge over the future excavation in this trench, so I won't need any extra supports while building it. It will also be the first line of defense against overground invaders. - Servu

Nearly complete - It's unlikely that the circular wall marking the excavation's outer boundary will ever rise very high. It's mostly there to keep my dwarves from crapping their pants whenever an alligator wanders near. Also it doesn't help a bit against the flocks of buzzards that raid the place every now and then - while weak in combat, those flying pests have even managed to steal food from my trade depot. - Servu

Δ 169. Floor 1 - Storage, wood and food industries

The cramped storage layer around my well is mostly dedicated to stockpiles and the booze and barrel industries. Along with assorted junk. I had to carve a second dining room here since all the dwarves were constantly complaining about the lack of tables and the grand hall is still years away from completion (though I suspect it's more of a pathfinding issue since my initial dining hall sees very little use.) - Servu

The military floor has my (surprise, surprise) barracks with an artifact chest to entertain the recruits. Along with the still unfurnished captain of the guard's accomodations, the jail and the arsenal dwarf's office. The firing range in the northeast is closed because my marksdwarves wont use any bolts (Though they have gained several marksdwarf levels with lessons only.) These facilities will probably be relocated somewhere near the access bridge as soon as I get to actually building it. - Servu

Quite self explanatory. Bedrooms for the dorfs (the larger ones are for the starting seven) along with offices, dining room and the hospital. Since the whole place will be dug away as my mine progresses, I have left it mostly unsmoothed and unengraved. I'll also provide some better housing in the future. The dwarves here don't sleep too well with ruckus from the workshops in the center and below. - Servu

My iron industry (no flux in this map) has grinded to a halt with my metalsmith getting a fey mood. Too bad he wants shell so I'm already looking for a replacement. Why do the best always go first? - Servu
Δ 164. Floor 6 and down - Current mining operation

On the left is the beginning of my strip mine that is currently on halt since I need the main dining hall excavated asap. The smaller underground mine on the right was born when I was in a hurry to begin my metal industry and had to get some magnetite fast.
Two floors down you'll find the top floor of the new dining hall. It will extend 10 z-levels down from the floor now visible (I want my non-constructed facilities to have at least mostly gray rock walls instead of mudstone so the dining hall must be dug below the mudstone layer so I can engrave it.) - Servu
