Now that the great flood of 213 has passed, it's time to cover some of the other events that happened during the last year.
Deliveries of goblinite finally resumed, with two decent sized deliveries during the year. Sadly, around half a dozen of the packages managed to slip through the hands of my champion package carriers and scatter uselessly during the first delivery.
I managed to cave in a very small (1x1) section of wall and puncture eight or so floors while removing some blocks that had fallen into my pump towers. Actually ended up losing the child that did the deconstruction...
Ended up not getting a dwarven caravan at all, oddly enough. A siege happened about the time I expected the caravan, but I never got anything indicating their arrival and there's no loose merchant gear lying around. Also had two merchants occupy some newly constructed graves, but I had a siege spawn on top of a dwarven caravan a few years back and only buried a lone guard from that caravan, so the merchants could've come from that.
To cover the flood a bit more, despite it's apparent severity, only two dwarves and a war dog died. All of which could've been prevented if I had kept the safety grates in place (They were all pulled into the cistern from the ground floor, the floor that previously had the grates covering the holes). It's really astonishing just how much water two water pump stacks can move. When I first activated the pump stack, a couple tiles of 7 depth water would be pumped up in a single time step. This is *substantially* faster than gravity's ability to pull the water down.
Fortunately, there was a simple solution for my particular design. The only downside is that the waterfall is now just a trickle, but a trickle beats tearing out a bunch of windmills to accommodate diagonal movement at the falls. I might fool around with some minor changes that'll improve the design, but that'll come after the rest of the fort's done.
This coming year should see the completion of the fort proper with enough time left over for me to start improving its overall look. Tear out and redesign the road, start work on the mine, redo the basement in obsidian, finish the other two wall segments, start planning some other minor projects to keep myself entertained until DF2010, etc...
I might actually take this to the next level and tear out some of the obsidian floors and replace them with bronze or something similar.
Maybe I've gone overboard with the uniform black look...
The outside still needs to be pure obsidian, but that shouldn't force the interior to be the same... - Ashery
