Blackjack - 307 Late Summer by Ambivalence

Map Description:

There's an innovation here (for me, at least) - a room for wrestlers to train in, which has a crusher to get rid of the bits of clothing they always leave strewn about.

Whatever shortages this fortress has, wood is not it.

About your "clothing crusher", there's another way to do that, but it involves a lot more work. You can make your room any size and shape you want. Go ahead and even put the Armor Stand in the center of the room. Then make a million 1x1 bridges to cover the whole floor. (They have to be able to raise, NOT RETRACT!) You also need a lever, and considering how much work the last part entails, make sure you pick a spot for it that you'll be pleased about forever. Then hook up every bridge to the lever. You know the rest. :D

:) Splendid. Unfortunately I'm short on stone for mechanisms, and I can't request more - because the liaison was accidentally crushed by a bridge. :)

Tee-hee. I just traded all the tables to the caravan. First time that wooden furniture has been the primary export of one of my fortresses!

I've never been a big fan of the giant wall around the game board strategy. what stone is purple?

A small warning: If the crusher goes of while the dwarves are in there, they will all instantly die. You may want to keep a chained animal or two near the lever, so that a kobold doesn't sneak in and smash the crap out of everyone. Also, dwarves gone mad may flip levers (I think, but I'm not sure), so you may want security on the lever.

magic dwarf: either Rutile or Pitchblende.

Yes, it's pitchblende.

I'm no fan of the giant wall strategy either (though I've used it enough times), but I want the little darlings to be able to run around in the open air for a change. If it were possible to build a castle fortress with an inner grassy area and have them not leave (but still be open for caravans and migrants)... maybe if the burrows thing is in the next release, it'll be interesting to see if we get new tools for that sort of thing. :)

(I like pitchblende - it seems somehow appropriate to use uranium ore. Rutile is equally cool, it's titanium ore.) :)

The possibility of a horrendous crusher accident crossed my mind when I nearly told them to pull the wrong switch when a liaison arrived - I was going to wall off the switch, but it would spoil the symmetry. :)

You could make a new switch in a secure location, and deconstruct the old one. Or, alternatively, you could dig a ditch around it with a bridge going for it, like
, ,,, ,
, .|. ,
^.s.^

Basically, ramps up at the east and west edges, a bridge, and a pit.

There are a LOT of shrubs around. More trees will grow if you get rid of some of those shrubs.

You could also have the barracks be on a retractable bridge that would drop the clothes into a magma pit or other crushing chamber. The magma pit is just for style points, but the secondary crushing chamber would allow you the safety to pull the lever and not accidentally kill somebody or their pet who wandered into the barracks at the wrong time. You could have the exit from the crushing chamber be a one-way so nobody accidentally wanders in there.
