Here's a question for you. How loong does it take 7 legendary miners to carve an epic spiral staircase? ANSWER: A whole heck of a long time less than it takes to design and place by hand! They also took the time to engrave the whole thing, but they admitedly weren't very good engravers. I think out of the whole project I got one masterpiece engraving.
I am all tuckered out. The spiral staircase was a major pain to designate, as is the bedroom design I settled on.
I got three caravans this autumn. Halfling, Ratling, and Dwarf merchants all parked on the same depot. Of course, my 7 legendary miners haven't done much in the way of food supplies for the past year or so, and they certainly didn't spend any time making crafts to sell. So they merely disassembled the depot right from underneath all three merchant crews, and stole enough food, booze, and metal bars to last the next couple years. Relations with the surrounding countries is low, but we'll make it up to them in the coming years.

I can see how security is a problem. It's a neat design, though, and I can tell it's seriously labor intensive. What killed this fort?

Yes, security was supposed to be way inside the fort, after the entrance. Funny enough, lack of security was what killed it.
The high value of the carvings and roasts invited invaders, and the workshops under the ramps had dwarves out in the open when goblins showed up. It took too many years to carve out. Next time I'll have to do it quicker.

That has been my problem with more elaborate designs. You have to wall in fast before the first raid shows up. But then, how do you wall in quickly and then build elaborate Urist McMansions? Hm...
