3 years later, and everyone's gotten settled in nicely. The surface has been walled in and mostly cleared (except for farms and garbage), and twin pump stacks extend toward the sky.
The population has been capped at 60 (and currently totals at 64), so as to keep the Baron away until the tower is constructed. Three hammerdwarves have been trained, but they are currently all in bed with broken arms after they charged into an ambush without their weapons (they had been busy doing some much needed wrestling training). A champion marksdwarf is currently standing in for them until they recover, and a large array of cage traps is helping to catch all of the ambushes as they arrive (and there've been quite a few).
As of yet, only a single kobold thief has dared show his face here. War dogs guard the entrance in case any more decide to show up.

I wouldn't say it's a new trick - players have been casting obsidian towers for years.
