Wasprag - 38 Mid Autumn by Quietust

Map Description:

Two and a half years since my previous snapshot.

The cage traps out front have been expanded in order to catch multiple goblin thieves and ambushes without requiring constant reloading. As an added bonus, I can let my marksdwarves kill the captured goblins so I can use their bones for making training bolts.

The expanded cage traps have also successfully caught an entire pack of wolves, consisting of 3 males and 2 females. The dwarven caravan which arrived just a while ago also managed to scare a female raccoon into the traps, so I've started my meat industry by breeding animals. There's a female cougar that shows up from time to time - with luck, I might be able to capture it and start breeding it with the male I caught earlier. Mountain goats and hoary marmots are also an option, though they tend not to wander far from the mountains, making any trapping attempts risky.

My 4 engravers have finally finished smoothing the walls, getting them all to Legendary, so I had them engrave my various meeting areas. Not surprisingly, there are quite a few images of burning goblins...

It turns out the GCS wasn't living on the level I had expected (presumably, batmen were responsible for all of those bones), so I asked Dwarf Companion for its general location and set a trap there. After several months of waiting, I got "An ambush! Drive them out!", and soon afterwards was the proud owner of a caged giant cave spider. It has since been tamed and placed in a silk farm where it is quite amazingly productive.

On a hunch, I set some animal traps at the edge of the bottomless pit. The first few caught bats, but then one managed to catch a purring maggot. A milking room has been set up next to the pit where my Milker can work in peace without worrying about the maggots being eaten, and work will begin once enough have been trapped (I have 2 so far).

The tower-cap farm has been dug out and cleared of stone, and the underground river has been extended and also cleared of stone, a process which took over a year to complete. The initial irrigation attempt didn't quite work as planned, as there were no gaps between the pumps and most of the water simply flowed back into the river. The next time I irrigate (which won't be for a while, since it'd kill all of the saplings), the entire area should be covered.

In the summer of year 36, I was sieged by the goblins, and two of the squads were led by none other than the Local Leader and the Ruler of the goblin civilizations! The Ruler was dropped into the magma, but the Local Leader escaped; he came back again during a few subsequent sieges, but eventually he was also dropped into the magma. Siege squads have now been led by humans and dwarves, and I suspect that they will soon run out - without leadership, the goblin civilization may be nearing its end.

Holy crap thats cool. How are you gonna get all that magma there? construct a big pumping tower?

I'll build a pump tower extending all the way to the top of the map, then direct its output into a tube that goes down to ground level, through a short tunnel, and into an opening at the bottom of the pyramid. Pump pressure should allow it to fill all the way to the top.

That's a fantastic fortress. Do the fortifications in the tower cap farm actually drain water?

Submitted by: Quietust - 2009-09-28 to 59 Early Winter

Absolutely - in fact, that's exactly why I built them.
