Hanging Gardens of Swordbaldness - 224 Early Spring by MrFake

Map Description:

Year 7 of construction.

A lot of activity is being moved into the new fortress, except for bedrooms. That means there is a lot of traffic between the forts. I've been putting off creating dormitories for far too long.

The phase 2 tests failed, and all of the year has been spent in removing water from a cistern one bucket at a time. That's what I get for forgetting to consider a contingency plan.

Wow. This is a very nice map. I have been working on one for a while now, and I hope I can post it soon. It is still not exactly the way I like it. Right now I am focusing on killing off some of my dwarves...there are too many to keep track of lol.

What in the world is Phase 2?!

Phase 2 tests seem to involve a bridge, a pressure plate and a long drop. Somewhat disconcerting.

19. Champion Flats

( 221 Early Spring to 224 Early Summer )
Multistory dwellings with bedrooms, dining rooms, offices, and closets. Quick access to food, the barracks, the front entrance, and the King (if there is a King), all overlooking the main hall. Nothing but the best for the protectors of our fort. - MrFake
18. All Things Food

( 223 Early Spring to onwards )
The first function for the above-ground fort.

Upon first moving the stills and booze out of the old fort, we were drunk into a shortage because the brewers couldn't produce fast enough. I moved all the plants to the new stills to fix that.

Then, the farmers couldn't harvest plants fast enough, given the long trek up from the farms. So many new plants withered while the peasant dwarfs (and there are many) ate all the plants, and that nearly caused a second shortage. Retrieving seeds from topside didn't help either. Even after carefully manipulating stockpiles so the farmers didn't have to travel far to do their work, production wasn't picking up.

I'm sorry to say that the elves, who bring us only cloth and plants, saved the fort that year. These dwarfs aren't a particularly gracious bunch, so we'll see if that affords them any mercy. - MrFake

This area has taken a nice shape in the last couple years. This is really as far as I'd planned, though. Just to give my masons something to do, I drew up a few side rooms on the east side. - MrFake
17. Main Staircase

This thing is a big headache. It takes forever to build each floor, a lot of stone and micromanagement goes into construction, and it's murder on path lengths.

I like the look though, and I'm still debating whether to put a waterfall down the center, or to preserve a section of the desert floor as a little display case (complete with animal specimens, naturally). - MrFake
5. Quarry

Usually I'm against mining out large chunks like this, but I need to for two reasons: stone for the above ground constructions, and space for phase 2 of the project. - MrFake

This area is meant as just a test to see if my plan works. Though, if all goes well, I'll just expand outward from this prototype.
