Map Description:

Finished fortress approximately 1 year after deadline. I don't expect this map to be considered, but I needed to finish the effort and it might be easier to see where things were going by seeing the finished product.

Frankly, I am floored by the design of this fortress. You are clearly a master of terrain deformation, and have made an aesthetically beautiful, unique, and highly defensible fortress layout.

Suffice it to say: Holy shit.

23. 10,000 foot view

( 1005 Early Spring to onwards )
This is the embark level after year 5. The wagon is still present there in the center, now at the top of the fortress. The surrounding area was excavated to reveal the fortress, fortress walls, moat, etc. A road has been set around the perimeter of the map with a bypass bridge to the west (visible). The stream was dammed and the waterfall brought back near the edge of the map to permit room for the fortress. - martin
23. Project 4 - Stream dam and upper road

One of the first efforts was to dam the stream in order to move the waterfall back, and add a bridge and upper road around the edge of the map. This allows invaders to be funneled to only two approach points - one on each side of the river for easy defense. Trade wagons can reach the trade depot from either side thanks to the bypass bridge on the west side of the map. - martin
22. Project 1 - Main bridge crossing

( 1001 to onwards )
This bauxite bridge holds the trade depot at its center. Elevated one level above the river, the bridge permits ship traffic beneath. Stairs lead to the warehouse level for trader convenience.

6 full fortress levels were constructed above the depot, forming the bulk of the fortress, with two naturally excavated towers providing structural support. The roof is used for bulk storage and the top of the towers is still natural soil to provide for a protected tree/outdoor farm area. - martin
15. Project 2 - Trade boat and dock

The natural inlet left from the moved stream was combined with a wooden dock to accommodate trade ships such as this paddleboat which has arrived with a load of cargo in it's lower hull. - martin
15. Project 5 - Fortress excavation

On the scale of a megaproject, the majority of the map was excavated to reveal the fortress columns and outer wall and tower defenses. Approximately 70,000 stone was revealed and 50,000 hauled to clean up most of the southern bank and part of the northern. Some of the stone was used to build the fortress bulk which spans the river. Virtually all of the external structures are revealed rather than constructed meaning they are dark, subterranean allowing dwarves to use them as shelter.

Unfortunately, time did not permit clearing the map of stone in time for the deadline. - martin
14. Project 3 - Main river dam and powerplant

The main river was dammed and a submerged powerplant built to not block river traffic. Time did not permit restoring water flow before the deadline. - martin
