how is it working out so far?

It's actually working out pretty well. Large engrave/smooth designations can cause a lot of the workforce to be tied up, but my biggest problem is announcement spam from one dwarf who lost both his eyes in a goblin siege.
I may have to arrange an accident.

Make him a marksdwarf - seems to be the general solution to a lot of that kind of injury.

He fell unconscious on a stone fall trap and was, of course, killed instantly.
