Far be it from me to tell another man how to run his fort, but if you set a garbage dump, then you can then designate all your stone as "trash", let your dwarves dump it all onto one square, and then reclaim it for your masons an smelters. This will take far less space than your huge stone stockpile.

I realize that I'm being a little of a hypocrite. My fortress Angelbane has WAY too much stone and I leave it lying all over the place.

Some people don't like the quantum stockpile method, and use the normal method instead.

Some people also like to play with house rules against using it for some forts, etc.

Fastest way to 'get rid' of annoying stone lying all over the place is to hide it.

I leave a lot just lying around, and hiding it, yeah, but quite frankly I don't feel like moving it most of the time.

You can download the compressed map file: 2009-04/leetsepeak-Papercastles-region5-104-34192.fdf-map but you will need the .NET version of SL's DF Map Compressor to convert to the .PNG image format.
