• ¶ 18. Crossbow Fortifications Over Killing Zone
  This is where marksdwarves are stationed to attack invaders and monitor friendlies. It is (in my opinion) my most impressive achievement with this fortress- which perhaps says a lot about what I consider impressive, heheh.
  
  
  The idea here is marksdwarves around the circle face down into the Killing Zone below, through which everyone entering the Fortress must pass. Since everyone faces inward during a real battle, enemies are exposed to all of the crossbowmen at one time when they reveal themselves.
  
  This strategy has worked efficiently to destroy any enemies not stopped by my traps, including a dragon. If necessary, a few fortifications face away from the killing zone to allow quick-footed archers to attack fleeing enemies.
  
  To the east is the access to the rest of the fortress- to reach these fortifications requires access to deeper levels of the fortress, to keep melee enemies from closing the distance quickly. - Nobu
• Δ 17. Entrance Hallway
  This is the least impressive area visually, and actually I don't like how it ended up being laid out. However, it's important to the fortress's defense.
  
  I was having a problem with dwarves running outside into the Killing Zone during battles, so this hallway has had some sections cut open in the hallway upstairs. This causes dwarves ordered to stay Inside to run back before actually entering the Killing Zone, which avoids exposing them to fire.
  
  You can also see my outdoor farms and some breweries and stuff. It needs some better laying out on my next fortress. - Nobu
• Δ 17. Killing Zone
  This is the fortress's killing zone. Enemies entering this area are in mortal danger of being captured or killed. All entrances to the fortress converge here, where visitors are exposed to crossbow fire on all sides from the fortifications above.
  
  The north passageway is also armed with cage traps, which will be changed to weapon traps once I have enough fuel for the forges- I already have more than enough prisoners. The cage traps have proved useful against thieves.
  
  A recent goblin ambush was captured along the north route (after killing a human diplomat- see if you can find him to the northeast). The only three to evade the traps were mowed down as they entered the killing zone. - Nobu
• Δ 16. Fishing Bridge
  This is a bridge with grates intended to protect fisherdwarves who want to visit the river. They can fish through the grates but don't get pulled under.
  
  I observed eventually that most of the visitors entering the map since the bridge's creation, both friendly and hostile, were starting just north or west of it across the river, so I armed it with traps.
  
  Although sometimes I catch a bunch of horses with it, it has captured entire squads of goblin invaders with its cage traps. - Nobu
• Δ 16. Indoor Fishing Area
  These rooms are intended for indoor fishing. The channel under the two small northern rooms doesn't have wall grates to prevent creatures from the river from reaching the cistern the wells draw from, so fish can wander down into the fortress. The grates allow a dwarf to fish without getting pulled under by all of the carp.
  
  Note that earlier in the fortress's history, there was a tragic accident as a fish somehow got into the well cistern and killed a fisherdwarf. A piece of his clothing is still down there- I added a wall around the opening for the wells to prevent this accident from happening again. Luckily I had already installed a system for draining the cistern in an emergency. - Nobu
• Δ 15. New Stockpiles
  New stockpiles for weapons and armor. I've starting moving armor already and those rooms have nearly completed their transition. Equipment is sorted by quality and usability in these rooms, to aid in equipping military dwarves. - Nobu
• Δ 15. Old Stockpiles
  The old weapon, armor, furniture, and craft good stockpiles (from left to right, starting with the narrow rooms). I'm adding larger, more expansive stockpiles and using these for intermediate goods now such as shell storage and blocks. In future fortresses I'll have to start with larger stocks from the onset to avoid the transition issues I am having. - Nobu
• Δ 15. Remains of a Caravan Escort
  An entire caravan escort was pulled into this pond by carp on only my second year of the game (quite some time ago), with all of the soldiers losing their lives and equipment. Luckily the wagons themselves got by, and my marksdwarves escorted them back when they left. At some point I'll empty the pond and pick their things up.
  
  Luckily none of the caravans since I built the bridge have started up there. - Nobu
• Δ 15. Tombs
  These are tombs for the few dwarves who have died (usually during ambushes or wild horse attacks), as well as a few nobles. Soldiers are assigned larger tombs than citizens, and pets have smaller rooms just for their kind.
  
  In the future, my tombs will have a more efficient layout.
  
  The large tomb with the engravings is for the mayor- it's the first thing I've had engraved. I'll have to get my engravers' skills up some more first I think before I let them at it again. In the future tombs will be more spread out to make better use of wall engravings.
  
  A large statue/coffin dump on the east side, since this is where I use those things the most. I tend to overproduce furniture. - Nobu
• Δ 14. Old Apartments
  Less space efficient and more difficult to maintain than the newer apartment layout on the level below. There's also a furniture dump on the west side. I tend to overproduce furniture. - Nobu
• Δ 14. Workshops
  This is the first level of workshops under the main hallways.
  
  The western room originally used a radically different layout, but I had trouble managing it and demolished all of the interior walls, and am beginning to build dividing walls to resemble the more orderly layout on the right. I know it's not the most efficient thing but it is easier to keep track of. - Nobu
• Δ 13. Arena, Holding Cells, and Butchershops
  I was experimenting with ways of dealing with prisoners. Here I've been dumping prisoners in cages, setting them up in the bottom of the arena, closing it off (by retract the small bridge down there), then letting my lil' military dwarves go nuts on them. Sometimes I use animals (horses) for this, and so there are butcher shops nearby.
  
  I'm building another room to experiment with dropping large numbers of animals to their deaths, but otherwise this area involves pits that go the bottom of the map that I didn't include to save file space. - Nobu
